Unbelievable Chris! Kamara Catches 'Robber'

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 28 Juni 2014 | 00.48

Sky Sports pundit and former footballer Chris Kamara proved he is still quick on his feet after catching a suspected robber in Brazil.

Kamara, who is a cult figure for his punditry and commentary on Soccer Saturday every week, posted a series of pictures and messages about the incident on his Twitter account.

In the first, the 56-year-old, who is in the country for the World Cup, wrote: "Not lost me pace!!! I just caught this street robber. Done in now though."

In one photo, Kamara is seen standing on the street with the alleged robber behind him in handcuffs.

Kamara, who played in defence and midfield for 10 clubs, describes him as "my prize catch".

In another, he is pictured speaking to a police officer with the caption: "Giving my statement now, 'well I ran after him & caught him'."

Kamara had to go to the police station to make a written statement, and appears to have been told off by police for chasing the man.

"Police & British Consulate in Brazil have politely told me off, a lot of these guys are armed! So don't chase again," he wrote.

Kamara also posted a link to the Foreign Office's tips for football fans travelling to Brazil.

It warns: "Be ready to hand over valuables if you're threatened; don't attempt to resist attackers, they may be armed or under the influence of drugs."

It also adds: "Be aware of pick-pockets and never leave your bag or belongings unattended while in public places or on public transport.

"Thieves operate inside airports, restaurants and hotels as well as outdoors - they are good at spotting tourists and know they will have valuables."

Ukraine Risks Russian Wrath By Signing EU Deal

Ukraine's president has signed a trade pact with the EU, seven months after his predecessor set off a crisis in the country by backing out of the same deal.

Petro Poroshenko said it may be "most important day" for Ukraine since it became independent from the Soviet Union.

But the deal has angered Russia, which, according to the Reuters news agency, warned of "grave consequences".

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia would take measures to protect its economy if it is negatively affected by the pact.

It came as the UN's refugee agency reported a sharp rise in the number of people fleeing eastern Ukraine.

More than 16,000 people have fled their homes in the past week, bringing the number of displaced within the country to 54,000.

Petro Poroshenko signs a trade pact with the EU. Mr Poroshenko gives a thumbs up to Angela Merkel at a meeting in Brussels

A decision by former president Viktor Yanukovych last November to turn his back on Europe in favour of closer ties with Russia prompted violent protests on the streets of Kiev.

Mr Yanukovych was eventually ousted in February, before the crisis that saw Russia annexe Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula.

Speaking on Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin called for a ceasefire in Ukraine to allow talks between Kiev and the rebels.

His comments came as two other former Soviet republics, Georgia and Moldova, also signed agreements with the EU in Brussels.

The deals mean businesses whose goods and practices meet EU standards will be able to trade freely in any union country without tariffs.

"Over the last months, Ukraine paid the highest possible price to make her European dreams come true," said Mr Poroshenko, who claimed to have signed the Association Agreement with the same pen his predecessor would have used.

"It's absolutely a new perspective for my country."

Alongside the deal is a long-term plan for Ukraine to adopt EU product regulations, modernise its economy and strengthen the rule of law and independent courts.

Moscow previously warned Ukraine that signing the deal could end its free trade arrangement with Russia.

Princess Fined For Near-Naked 'Kill Muslims' Rant

A German princess has been fined £1,000 for drunkenly lashing out at first aiders and ranting about killing Muslims at an upmarket Oktoberfest party.

Her Serene Highness Princess Theodora Sayn-Wittgenstein, 27, tried to climb a fence and started stripping off as the event in St Andrews, a university town in Fife, drew to a close.

Staff managed to get her to a first aid tent, where she told worker Farah Hussein: "I was doing my nails this morning. I wondered how many Muslims I could kill."

The princess then attacked another first aider and a security guard, kicking one and trying to headbutt the other, before colleagues managed to pin her to the ground.

When police arrived, Sayn-Wittgenstein was so aggressive they had to put her in leg restraints before putting her in a van and taking her to a local station.

The princess tried to hide from photographers under a brunette wig as she arrived at Dundee Sheriff Court with her father Prince Ludwig.

Prosecutor Trina Sinclair told the court Ms Hussein was trying to help the near-naked princess to replace her clothing when she launched into her anti-Muslim tirade, causing the first aider to leave the room in tears.

Ms Sinclair went on: "The accused stood on a chair and began to rant about her human rights.

Alfred Dunhill Links Championship - Practice Round The party was held in St Andrews, where the princess was a student

"Cara Anderson stood behind her trying to stabilise the chair she was standing on but (the princess) fell on top of her.

"The accused began to thrash and struck her several times."

Sayn-Wittgenstein lives in Germany and works for her father's alternative energy firm but gave an address in Chelsea, London, on court papers.

She admitted one charge of breach of the peace aggravated by religious prejudice, two counts of assault and an offence under the Police and Fire Reform (Scotland) Act.

Defence solicitor Douglas Williams said his client had a thyroid condition which may have contributed to her behaviour.

He said Sayn-Wittgenstein, who graduated from St Andrews in 2011, had "brought shame on herself and her family".

He said: "Her behaviour was totally out of character. She has a degree in international relations and has lived in Jordan, immersing herself in Middle Eastern culture."

Sheriff Mark Stewart QC told Sayn-Wittgenstein: "These comments you made are unacceptable. They would cause nothing but division, concern and unhappiness."

Illegal Immigrant Smuggling Racket Smashed

By Nick Pisa, Sky News Reporter

Police have smashed an international gang smuggling hundreds of illegal immigrants into Britain using fake documents.

To get into the country the racket provided identity cards, simply inserted new photographs and charged "customers" between £6,000 and £10,000 (£4,800 - £8,000).

The method - far from sophisticated - was eventually clocked by Italian border guards at Rome airport which the gang used as its onward hub.

Officials said that in total 21 people - including a retired police officer - had been held in the operation which was code named Eagle. Further arrests are planned.

Police said the legitimate holders of the identity card were involved in the scam and would be paid a cut.

The scam involved Albanians travelling initially to Turkey and then on to Britain via Rome.

The illegal immigrants would be "accompanied" through Italian passport control to help provide a cover and so as not to arouse suspicion.

But the gang were rumbled after one passport official began to closely examine an identity card which he suspected was false and the "owner" then ran off.

An immigration scam has been busted. The gang was smashed after a passport official became suspicious

Footage provided by Italian police showed a couple walking through passport control after having their documents checked - the woman was travelling on a false identity card.

Rome airport police chief Antonio Del Greco said: "The operation was highly organised and highly lucrative as people were charged up to 10,000 euros a time.

"We suspect that at least a dozen people a week travelled to Britain using this method and it was arranged along the lines of a travel agency.

"The illegal immigrants were provided with false documents and accompanied to passport control by an Italian who would then travel with them to provide cover.

"The operation lasted 18 months and although we suspect a dozen people a week went through the true figure could be many more."

It comes just days after it emerged French fishing boats had been used to smuggle dozens of Albanian illegal immigrants across the Channel to remote beaches and cove along the south coast.

"There is currently no suggestion that Mr Weaver is any risk to members of the public, but we need to locate him as soon as possible."

Firearms officers are on patrol in the area.

"He's a friend of mine - he's been my neighbour for a long time," she said.

"He would shoot rabbits - he had a licence. You'd hear him shooting sometimes. He was also teaching some of the locals to paint - he paints lovely pictures."

The decision to close the school was made by its headteacher in consultation with police.

A police spokesman said: "This unusual decision has been taken as a precautionary measure for safety reasons and because of the ongoing police activity in that area.

"We do understand that this will cause some significant inconvenience for some parents and local residents and this decision was not taken lightly, but public safety is the most important concern of the school and police."

Pregnant Teen Jayden Parkinson 'Buried Hastily'

The burial of pregnant teenager Jayden Parkinson in a grave by her ex-boyfriend was "fairly hasty" a court has heard.

Ben Blakeley admits dumping the 17-year-old's body in the grave of his dead uncle a week after killing her.

Jayden was last seen with the 22-year-old former binman on December 3 last year in Didcot, Oxfordshire.

The pair had met to talk about her pregnancy.

Prosecutors allege that when she told Blakeley the news the previous day in a telephone call he became angry, denying he was the father.

Blakeley, of Reading, Berkshire, denies murdering Jayden but admits her manslaughter and attempting to pervert the course of justice over the disposal of her body.

But his manslaughter plea has not been accepted by the prosecution, and he has gone on trial along with a 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons.

All Saints Cemetery Jayden's body was found at All Saints' churchyard in Didcot

The youth has also pleaded guilty to attempting to pervert the course of justice, but denies preventing a lawful burial, arguing he did not know he was helping bury Jayden's body.

Forensic archaeologist Dr Karl Harrison carried out the excavation of Alan Kennedy's grave at All Saints' churchyard in Didcot.

He told Oxford Crown Court a "wiggly line of string" had been used to mark out three sides of the grave and was held in place with screws and nails.

Dr Harrison told jurors he removed around 20cm of soil and he could clearly see spade marks, which had been made with "some force".

Jayden was wearing torn black leggings and her legs were bent back behind her body with her ankles pressed against her thighs, Dr Harrison told the court.

He added that after her body had been placed in the grave, the excavated soil was put back on top and the excess was compacted around the sides.

Dr Harrison said: "It was my feeling on excavating the entirety of Miss Parkinson's body she appeared to have been subjected to a fairly hasty disposal."

A post-mortem found Jayden died as a result of pressure to the neck.

Jayden Parkinson Blakeley denies murdering Jayden, but admits her manslaughter

The jury also heard from taxi driver Adrian Stovell, who unwittingly helped Blakeley lift a heavy suitcase allegedly containing Jayden's body into his boot.

Mr Stovell had picked him up in the village of Upton at about 2am on December 9.

The taxi driver said Blakeley asked him to pick up a suitcase containing his belongings, telling him he had been kicked out by his girlfriend

Mr Stovell said he drove his taxi along an unlit track until his headlights illuminated a suitcase on the floor.

"It was though someone had been dragging it down along the track and just dropped it," he told the court.

"The suitcase was on its back, flat to the floor. He went off to get the suitcase. He had difficulty getting it along the floor because the wheels were so small."

Mr Stovell added he could see the man was struggling to lift the suitcase so he got out to help.

The trial continues.

Ex-Govt Adviser Charged Over Child Images

A former adviser to David Cameron has been charged with making and possessing indecent images of children.

Patrick Rock, 63, was arrested at his home in London in February after Downing Street contacted police.

He has been charged with three offences of making indecent images of children and one offence of possessing 59 indecent images of children.

The National Crime Agency (NCA) said the four charges cover offences allegedly committed between July 31 and August 31, 2013.

Asked about the decision at a press conference in Brussels, the Prime Minister said: "I won't be saying anything.

"It would be purely a matter for the courts and it wouldn't be appropriate to comment."

Rock has been bailed to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on July 3.

The NCA said the images have been assessed by Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) officers and Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) lawyers as meeting the definition of Level C.

Level C is defined as "indecent images depicting erotic posing with no sexual activity", an NCA spokeswoman said.

Rock, a special adviser on policy, was arrested at his home on February 13. He had resigned from his post a day earlier.

He has been an influential figure behind the scenes in the Conservative Party for decades, and made three unsuccessful bids to become an MP.

In the 1970s, he was credited with coining the Tory slogan "Cows moo, dogs bark, Labour puts up taxes".

In 2011 Rock was drafted in by Mr Cameron - a fellow adviser to former Home Secretary Michael Howard in the 1990s - to beef up the Downing Street policy unit.

Prior to his arrest and resignation, he had been involved in drawing up government policy on internet porn filters.

Chiellini Says Suarez Bite Ban Is 'Excessive'

Luis Suarez: A Huge Talent But Trouble

Updated: 6:06am UK, Friday 27 June 2014

By Paul Kelso, Sports Correspondent, in Rio de Janeiro

To his countrymen, Luis Suarez is an unambiguous character.

He is the boy from an impoverished quarter of Salto who became a hero; a natural who plays with the ferocious pride and raw spirit that embodies the national self-image.

You do not have to be Uruguayan to admire his luminous talent. Watching him score the goals that eliminated England in Sao Paulo last week it was impossible not to admire the certainty of his play, the single-minded ability not just to try but to deliver.

But it is equally hard to ignore his recidivist, violent streak, and nor should we try.

Uruguay has rushed to his defence this week, but none of the conspiracies or indulgences offered by his countrymen can sweeten Suarez's offences.

Three times on a professional football field he has bitten an opponent. It is conduct we train out of pets and children, assuming that adult humans do not need to be reminded.

Who knows where it comes from. An army of experts have had their say in the last few days, offering explanations ranging from the Freudian to the footballing.

For everyone, save Suarez, the answer is largely irrelevant. What matters for his club and country is what happens next.

For Liverpool it is a pressing question. The club and its fans love Suarez but they have good reason to feel let down.

They backed him ham-fistedly through the Patrice Evra racism storm, and then with far more assurance and self-awareness following his assault on Branislav Ivanovic.

Last season they seemed to get a return on that pastoral care. Suarez was focused and fabulous, his goals fully deserving a clean sweep of player of the year awards from his fellow pros and the journalists his teammates now accuse of conspiring, and supporters groups.

Anfield fully expected to return to the barricades for Suarez this summer, but they anticipated the attack would come from Real Madrid and Barcelona, once more hunting his signature.

Instead, they will welcome back a player who will not be available until November and will attract only negative vibes in the meantime. Restoring trust on both sides will be a major challenge for manager Brendan Rogers.

There is perhaps only one group for whom Suarez's inexplicable conduct is good news.

It is not often that Fifa has been able to scale the moral high-ground in recent times but the swift, decisive judgment against Suarez offered them a chance they were not going to miss.

Fifa president Sepp Blatter resisted repeated invitations from Sky News to offer a word on Suarez's ban but the message of his silence was clear. The World Cup show has been a wow. Presented with a pantomime villain Fifa banished him to the wings.

For once, few will argue it was the right move.

PM Fails To Block Juncker From Top EU Job

The nomination of arch-federalist Jean-Claude Juncker as the new president of the Brussels Commission is a "bad day for Europe", David Cameron has said.

The Prime Minister - who was defeated in his attempt to block Mr Juncker's candidacy - said his fellow EU leaders had made a "serious mistake" in allowing the European Parliament to choose the presidency.

"This is a bad day for Europe. It risks undermining the position of national governments, it risks undermining the power of national parliaments and it hands new power to the European Parliament," he said.

Mr Cameron had campaigned against the appointment of Mr Juncker, arguing he would block reform of the EU.

He also warned it could fuel Euroscepticism in the UK and make it more likely that Britons will vote to quit the EU in the referendum he is planning for 2017.

In forcing a vote on the nomination, Mr Cameron broke with tradition that the Commission chief is approved by consensus of the EU's national heads of government.

In the end, only Hungary joined Britain in voting against Mr Juncker's appointment, which was approved by a margin of 26-2.

Jean-Claude Juncker And David Cameron The PM argued Mr Juncker was not the "right person" for the post

His nomination, which must be confirmed by a vote in the European Parliament, was announced by European Council president Herman van Rompuy on Twitter.

He wrote: "Decision made. The European Council proposes Jean-Claude Juncker as the next President of the European Commission."

A delighted Mr Juncker tweeted: "I am proud and honoured to have received the support of the European Council."

At the end of the Brussels summit, Mr Cameron said that he had insisted on a vote as a matter of principle.

"If the European Council, the elected heads of government, are going to allow the European Parliament to choose the next president of the European Commission in this way I wanted it on the record that Britain opposed that," he said.

The Prime Minister said that while Europe had taken "one big step backwards" Britain had "made some small steps forward".

The Council had "broken new ground" in two areas during their discussions, he said.

This included an agreement that ever-closer union allows for different paths of integration and respects the wishes of countries such as Britain that do not want a closer relationship.

Jean-Claude Juncker and Angela Merkel Former Luxembourg premier Mr Juncker was backed by Germany's Angela Merkel

The leaders had also "agreed explicitly that they need to address Britain's concerns about the EU", he told a news conference.

"While Europe has taken one big step backwards today with their choice of Commission president, I have made some small steps forward, securing a new relationship for Britain in the EU," he said.

Labour's Shadow Foreign Secretary Douglas Alexander commented: "The outcome of today's summit represents an abject failure of leadership for David Cameron.

"Defeat for David Cameron was not inevitable. Yet is was predictable. Because for the past four years he's been burning bridges with our European allies when he should have been building alliances."

UKIP leader Nigel Farage said: "I think what's clear is that any cards that Mr Cameron may have had to play have been spent, and have been lost over a futile battle that he was bound to lose from the beginning.

"(Any) renegotiation now doesn't look very likely. He has been humiliated today but worse than that, he actually looks very isolated."

But Eurosceptic Conservative backbencher John Redwood did not view Mr Cameron's isolation in Brussels as a problem.

Writing on his blog, the former Cabinet minister said: "The battle over Mr Juncker was but the first skirmish in a long negotiation of a new relationship for the UK with the rest of the EU."

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 26 Juni 2014 | 00.27

Police in Rochdale have launched an investigation after a 90-year-old woman was attacked in the street and raped.

The woman was attacked as she walked to a butchers in Spotland Road around 6.45am on Tuesday to buy a bacon sandwich.

She had a £1 coin in one hand and a walking stick in the other.

A hand was placed over her mouth from behind and she was dragged backwards before she lost consciousness.

When she came round she found she had been pulled to the ground and raped.

She managed to pick herself up and walked to the butchers to raise the alarm and the staff called the police.

Superintendent Alistair Mallen, of Greater Manchester Police, said the victim was "really upset, distressed and traumatised".

Alistair Mallen Supt Alistair Mallen warns the attacker police will catch him

Looking straight into the camera, he told Sky News: "What I'd say to that individual - and if he's watching me now - get yourself to a police station and explain your actions.

"If you don't, I'll tell you now, we will be knocking at your door in the next 24 hours."

He said earlier: "I am sure the entire community will share our revulsion at this.

"The victim has been through an horrific ordeal and we are all hoping she can make a full recovery.

"She is now being supported by experienced officers and we are doing everything possible to reassure her that we will catch the man responsible.

"This kind of attack is thankfully so rare that it will naturally cause a huge amount of concern in the community.

"I now want people, including the criminal fraternity, to imagine if that had been your mum or grandma. I want to harness these feelings and use them to help the police do their job - catch this man and put him before the courts.

"It may not have struck you as significant at the time, but please, if you saw anything or anyone that you think could be relevant then please call the police."

Police want to hear from people who saw the victim - and potentially her attacker - on Tuesday morning.

The victim is white and was wearing a white summer dress with a flower print and a cardigan.

The attacker is described as a white male but no other details were available.

Rochdale MP Simon Danczuk said there was "a real sense of shock and horror" in the community over the attack, and urged anyone with information to search their conscience and help police "catch this sick individual".

"Local people are struggling to comprehend how anyone can do this. Our heart goes out to this poor woman. She must have gone through hell," he said.

"Anyone with even a glimmer of suspicion should contact the police immediately."

Fifa: Suarez 'Must Face Severe Sanction'

Luis Suarez "must face a severe sanction" if he is found to have bitten an Italian player during a World Cup match, a senior Fifa official has told Sky News.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a senior official from international football's governing body said the Liverpool star "must face a severe sanction. If we allow this where will it stop?"

Fifa has opened disciplinary proceedings against Luis Suarez after he was accused of biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini.

The striker and the Uruguayan FA have until 9pm UK time to "provide their position and any documentary evidence they deem relevant".

Uruguay trained in Natal on Wednesday morning, but Suarez and his teammates who played against Italy were given a day off to rest.

Suarez has already commented on the incident, declaring: "These things happen on the pitch."

Suarez "bite" incident The Uruguay striker has previous after biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic

The striker clashed with Chiellini in the 79th minute of his country's Group D match, a game they won 1-0 to advance to the last 16.

Television replays show Suarez moving his head towards Chiellini and apparently sinking his teeth into his shoulder, with Chiellini responding by swinging his arm.

Defending the alleged attack, Suarez said: "We were both just inside the area, he struck me in the chest with his shoulder and he hit me in the eye as well.

"These are things that happen on the pitch and you shouldn't attach so much importance to them.

"I'm very happy to have qualified. We are taking each game as it comes, we know that we're in a difficult situation, we're at our limits now."

Speaking to Rai TV after the game, Chiellini said: "It was ridiculous not to send Suarez off.

Uruguay Ghana 2010 Luis Suarez Hand Ball Suarez was sent off for a notorious handball in South Africa in 2010

"It is clear, clear-cut and then there was the obvious dive afterwards because he knew very well that he did something that he shouldn't have done."

Article 77 of Fifa's disciplinary code allows it to hit players with retrospective bans of up to two years if it decides there is a case to answer.

Daily Mirror football writer Darren Lewis told Sky News' Sunrise programme he believes Suarez faces a lengthy international ban, but is likely to escape punishment that would prevent him from playing for Liverpool.

Both Adidas and betting firm 888poker - two of Suarez's key sponsors - have announced they are reviewing their relationship with the player following the alleged bite.

Suarez served a 10-match ban last year for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic.

Before his move to Liverpool in 2011, Suarez was suspended for seven matches by the Netherlands football federation after biting PSV Eindhoven's Otman Bakkal when he played for Ajax.

He also received a eight-match ban in 2011 after the Football Association found he had racially abused Patrice Evra seven times during a game against Manchester United. He has never apologised to Evra.

Professor Cary Cooper from Lancaster University told Sky News that if the forward is found guilty in this latest incident, he should get professional help.

He said: "For anyone in a job who's behaved in an anti-social way, they should be helped - you go to a clinical psychologist, a counselling psychologist and they would try to unwrap why you do that, and then channel that in a more positive way."

He said any ban should also include an order or encouragement for Suarez to get help for his behaviour.

A 26-year-old bride-to-be has died in a car crash just minutes after snapping a selfie in the vehicle as she headed to her bachelorette party.

Colette Moreno leaves behind a five-year-old son and a devastated family.

"She was so excited. We were planning," said a tearful fiance, 28-year-old Jesse Arcobasso.

Ms Theobald said Ms Moreno suffered from asthma and had been coughing because of the fumes that the truck was discharging.

"We both thought it was clear and there was a hill that neither one of us saw," she recalled.

"There was a truck coming and I swerved and he swerved with me."

Ms Theobald suffered minor injuries.

"I've never had a friend like her. I won't ever have a friend like her," she said.

Colchester Murders: £20,000 Reward On Offer

Police investigating the murders of a Saudi student and a vulnerable man in Essex say they have recovered 38 knives during their search.

The update on the investigation came as Crimestoppers announced a reward of £10,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Nahid Almanea's killer.

The 31-year-old was stabbed 16 times as she walked along the Salary Brook Trail footpath in Colchester on June 17.

Police are looking into a possible link between Ms Almanea's murder and that of Jim Attfield, who was stabbed 102 times on his arms, hands, back, neck and head in what police described as a "frenzied" attack two months earlier.

A £5,000 reward that was previously offered for information about his death has been doubled to £10,000.

Detective Chief Superintendent Steve Worron, of Essex Police, said the 38 knives recovered so far were being examined to see whether any of them were used in either attack.

Hundreds of officers from several different forces have spoken to more than 100 witnesses and carried out door-to-door inquiries at 325 houses, he added.

On Tuesday, police said they were trying to trace a man who may have followed Ms Almanea four days before she was killed.

Witnesses said the man walked behind two women as they came out of a house in Stanley Wooster Way at around 8.45am on June 13.

He is described as white, in his 30s, around 5ft 10in tall and with short, dark hair. He was dressed casually and was wearing dark jeans.

Police have said they do not have evidence that the murders of Ms Almanea and Mr Attfield are linked or that a serial killer is involved.

However, "parallel" investigations are being carried out and they have admitted there are obvious similarities.

Witnesses are asked to contact the incident room at Essex Police on 01245 282103. Alternatively, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 55111.

Hacking Trial Jury Discharged On Final Charges

Jurors who failed to reach verdicts on four final charges in the phone-hacking trial have been discharged by a judge who criticised the Prime Minister for comments that could have caused the case to collapse.

Andy Coulson, the former Number 10 spin doctor, and the ex-News Of The World (NOTW) royal editor Clive Goodman had been accused of conspiring to commit misconduct in public office by paying police officers for two royal phone directories.

But after sitting through eight months of evidence at the Old Bailey, the jury could not reach even a majority verdict and were discharged.

It means stinging criticism of David Cameron can now be reported for the first time.

The judge, Mr Justice Saunders, said he was "very concerned" about comments the Prime Minister made while the jury was still deliberating.

"What has happened is unsatisfactory so far as justice and the rule of law are concerned," he said.

News of the World newspapers The News Of The World was shut down in the wake of the scandal

The move to discharge the jury comes after Coulson was found guilty of plotting to hack phones between 2000 and 2006 while working at the NOTW.

The scandal, which cost the 46-year-old his job as the Prime Minister's communications director and led to the closure of his former newspaper, involved a list of high-profile targets, including Kate Middleton and Prince William, actor Daniel Craig and murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler.

His former colleague Rebekah Brooks and her husband Charlie Brooks were cleared of the charges they faced.

Shortly after those verdicts were delivered, Mr Cameron led the way in what the judge called "open season" by apologising for hiring Coulson in 2007.

Sky's Home Affairs Correspondent Mark White, at the Old Bailey, said: "Those comments were very prejudicial, suggesting Coulson had been dishonest.

"There was a move by the legal counsel for Coulson and Goodman to have those remaining counts thrown out ... because they felt the jury wouldn't be able to reach fair conclusions.

"However, in essence, that argument is a moot point for the moment because the jury hasn't been able to reach verdicts."

At a heated Prime Minister's Questions, Labour leader Ed Miliband accused Mr Cameron of "wilful negligence" by "bringing a criminal into Downing Street".

His opposite number replied with regular references to the Leveson Inquiry into press ethics, saying the report "made no criticism of my conduct".

The judge praised jurors for their "enormous patience and tolerance" and said they shown "exceptional" dedication.

A decision on whether to hold a retrial will be made next week, with sentencing possible on Friday.

Coulson faces up to two years in prison.

Assistant Commissioner Cressida Dick, of the Metropolitan Police, which launched Operation Weeting to investigate phone hacking at the NOTW, said: "Throughout the investigation, we've done our best to follow the evidence without fear or favour.

"We were conscious of the sensitivities and legal complexities of investigating a national newspaper containing confidential journalistic material.

"This investigation has never been about an attack on press freedom but to establish whether any criminal offences had been committed."

Taliban Storms Sangin As US Troops Leave Base

Hundreds of Taliban fighters have reportedly swept into Afghanistan's Sangin district, just weeks after the last US troops left their post there.

More than 800 insurgents are believed to have been locked in a five-day battle with soldiers in the region, with 2,000 families forced to flee their homes.

Siddiq Siddiqi, a spokesman for Afghanistan's interior ministry, told the AFP news agency: "There was a major attack by the Taliban and their supporters.

"We're reinforcing Afghan national security forces and have suffered no major loss of territory.

"About 100 Taliban have been killed so far."

The number of dead was corroborated by the Iranian news agency Fars, which said 35 civilians had also been killed.

Omar Zwak, a spokesman for the Helmand provincial government, told AFP extra soldiers and police had been sent to restore security in Sangin, which has been a hotbed of violence throughout the 13-year battle in Afghanistan.

British forces suffered some of their heaviest losses of the entire war during a four-year mission in the region, with at least 100 soldiers killed during operations there.

An economic and transport hub, Sangin is strategically important for both the Taliban and the Afghan government.

It is home to vital power lines and some of Afghanistan's most fertile farmland.

The Nato-led International Security Assistance Force, known as Isaf, has fewer than 50,000 troops left in Afghanistan, including 32,800 from the US and 5,200 from the UK.

The last remaining British troops will leave within months, with Afghan authorities due to assume full responsibility for security by the end of the year.

Nigeria: 'Ten Killed' In Shopping Mall Blast

At least ten people have been killed in a blast at a shopping centre in the Nigerian capital Abuja, according to reports.

Witnesses said body parts were scattered around the exit to Emab Plaza, in the upmarket Wuse 11 suburb.

They said they saw a number of bodies in the same area. All spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals.

The explosion is the latest of a series of violent attacks blamed on suspected Islamic extremists.

Around 120 people were killed in two separate explosions in Abuja in April.

Both were claimed by the terror group Boko Haram who mainly operate in the northeast, where they are based.

On Monday a bomb at a medical college in Kano, in the north, killed at least eight people.

Last week, at least 14 died in a bomb blast at a World Cup viewing site in Damaturu, a state capital in the northeast.

In May, twin car bombs in the central city of Jos left more than 130 people dead; and a car bomb at a bus station killed 24 people in the Christian quarter of Kano, a Muslim city.

Boko Haram attracted international condemnation for the mass kidnapping of more than 200 schoolgirls in April.

It has been blamed for this week's abductions of another 91 people -  31 boys and 60 girls and women including children as young as three.

Nigeria's military and government claim to be winning the five-year battle against the insurgents but the tempo and deadliness of attacks has increased this year, with more than 2,000 people already killed compared to an estimated 3,600 in the previous four years.

Boko Haram wants to establish an Islamic state in Nigeria, whose 170 million population is divided almost equally between Muslims who are dominant in the north and Christians in the south.

Drug-Smuggling Drone Crashes Into Prison

A helicopter drone being used to try to smuggle drugs into a jail has crash-landed in the prison exercise yard.

The "sophisticated" remote-controlled device, which was fitted with a camera, came down after it hit special netting at Wheatfield prison in west Dublin.

The wire had been put in place to prevent full-size helicopters from landing and helping prisoners to escape.

The incident happened at 11am on Tuesday when prison staff noticed an object crashing from above.

It is not known what quantity of drugs the four-rotor drone was carrying but a prison source said: "This isn't a toy.

"It was a high spec drone with a high spec camera through which the operators could monitor the route it was taking.

"They wouldn't have intended to land it in the prison, just hover over it until the inmates got their hands on the contraband."

A source told Sky News the drugs were on a rope that was attached to the drone.

Inmates, who were apparently expecting the device, ran towards it and the alleged ringleader apparently put some of the drugs inside his body.

He is currently in isolation at the jail and is under observation until the substances come out of his body naturally.

The source told Sky that 20 prisoners had been isolated and were facing possible disciplinary action.

He said the "unique attempt" showed "the lengths people will go to smuggle contraband into prison".

Police are said to be hunting the drone's pilots, who were thought to be controlling it from nearby and had earlier done a trial run.

The device has now been seized by prison staff.

A Gardai spokeswoman told Sky News: "Gardaí in Ronanstown can confirm that they were alerted to an incident at Wheatfield Prison at approximately 11am on Tuesday, June 24, 2014.

"Gardaí were handed a device from the Prison Service staff and the matter is under investigation."
