TV Election Debates: Letter To PM's Media Boss

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 07 Maret 2015 | 00.48

The letter to David Cameron's director of communications from Sky, BBC, ITV and Channel 4 reads as follows:

Letter From Broadcasters to Craig Oliver

Dear Craig

Thank you for your letter of 4th March.

We are responding as the broadcasters' group and as you released your letter to the press we will be making this response public too.

The broadcasters have over the past six months worked hard to ensure that our viewers have the opportunity to watch election debates in 2015.

We have done so in an independent, impartial manner, treating invited parties on an equitable basis. We have listened to the views expressed by all parties and, as we promised from the outset, have kept evidence about electoral support, public attitudes to the debates and appropriate participation under review.

The debates were enormously well received by 22 million viewers in 2010 and our research has shown that there is a public desire and a public expectation for debates in 2015.

We have consistently set out our intention to hold three debates during the unusually long formal election campaign period - 30th March to 7th May 2015. We spaced the planned debates two weeks apart, twice the length of time between debates as compared to 2010. The dates - 2nd April, 16th April and 30th April - were first published in October 2014 and have not been changed.

We believe that the formal election period is the right time to hold election debates. It is the point at which the parties have published their election manifestos and the point at which the electorate as a whole is most engaged with discussion of election issues and the public debate about the future of the country.

In October we proposed one head-to-head debate between the two leaders who could realistically become Prime Minister and two debates between more parties. We listened to all parties' views on the proposals - both those initially invited and others - and we reviewed the developing evidence on electoral support and public attitudes to the debates.

In discussions the Conservatives argued for a more inclusive set of debates and in particular called for the inclusion of the Greens. We listened to that argument and to others expressed by other parties and by members of the public. We considered evidence of increased electoral support for some parties - notably the SNP and to some degree the Greens - and looked at some evidence that there was public support for a more inclusive format in the debates.

Taking into account all these factors, we made a decision to adjust our proposal to make it even more  inclusive - keeping the two party head-to-head debate but expanding the two multi-party debates to include all the main choices available to voters in England, Wales and Scotland. The parties included were: Conservative, Labour, Liberal Democrat, UKIP, SNP, Plaid Cymru and the Greens.

Separately, it was confirmed that BBC Northern Ireland and UTV were planning debates including all the five separate major parties in Northern Ireland - DUP, Sinn Fein, UUP,  SDLP and the Alliance Party.

The two sets of debates would enable all voters in the United Kingdom to see debates with the leaders of the main choices they were able to vote for.

We noted the Conservatives' initial welcoming tone for our amended proposal.

On the basis of this proposal - first tabled in October - and amended to take into account changing facts and input from parties, notably including the Conservatives, we have conducted numerous meetings and conversations with representatives of all parties invited. These have taken place in an organised manner, following clear agendas and in a generally good atmosphere.

We have listened to the views of all parties as we've framed the rules for the 2015 debates. The draft rules which all parties have been given are based on the 2010 rules, amended for the changed circumstances of 2015 and in particular the potential participation of seven parties.

The plan - as you know - for the multi-party debates has been for two 2 hour debates, allowing sufficient time across the two programmes for all seven leaders to participate in a full discussion on a good range of the really big issues facing the country at this election.

The leaders would have the opportunity to address questions posed by the studio audience. The format would allow them to give an uninterrupted answer to the question and then would open up the debate to a moderated discussion between the leaders for up to around 17 to 18 minutes on each question. We think this format, over the course of the two multi-party debates, will allow a proper discussion across a good range of subjects. It does, however, require two debates and a substantial allocation of time to each programme.

Once we have received any further comments from the parties on our draft detailed arrangements we will publish the arrangements as we did in 2010.

This process has all happened in a very orderly manner and we're grateful to representatives of all the parties who've engaged constructively with us.

On 4th March you wrote to us tabling an idea that you had not raised in the previous six months of discussions.

There are elements of it which we welcome and elements which we don't believe have been fully thought through.

The Conservative Party proposal - as we understand it - is for:

:: One debate

:: 90 minutes in duration

:: Involving seven parties

:: The DUP should be allowed to make its case to be included

:: It should take place in the week of 23rd March

The letter makes no mention of the head-to-head debate which we had previously understood the Conservatives were in favour of.

We believe the proposal for just one debate of 90 minutes duration is insufficient to cover the main election issues with seven participants. Our 2 x 2 hour debates format will allow all seven leaders sufficient time to discuss properly a good range of the main election issues. One 90 minute debate with seven leaders would inevitably lead to much less ground being covered, with much shorter contributions from all involved.

We welcome the fact that the Conservatives propose the same seven parties included in our plans. We have included all the main parties available as choices to all voters in England, Scotland and Wales.

We note that you say the DUP should be allowed to make its case to be included. We have already considered the DUP's case very thoroughly. We have responded to the DUP saying that we do not believe there is any obligation on us to invite the DUP or any other Northern Ireland party to take part. It would be unfair and partial to invite the DUP and not the other four major parties in Northern Ireland. We believe voters in Northern Ireland will be well served by the BBC Northern Ireland and UTV debates. The party systems in Northern Ireland and in Great Britain are different and our debates plan reflects that.

We welcome the fact that you have for the first time in six months indicated a seven day period in which the Conservatives would definitely join a debate.

We have given your proposal serious consideration but we don't think it achieves the goal of providing our viewers with election debates that can properly explore a reasonably full range of issues.

We do, however, welcome the positive elements of your letter.

In light of that we propose the following:

We will continue to plan for the three TV debates on 2nd April, 16th April and 30th April as discussed extensively with all parties.

Sky and Channel 4 have already said they are prepared to host the two party debate on a different date if the leaders of the Conservative and Labour parties can agree. Failing that the broadcaster preparations will continue for 30th April.

The ITV debate on 2nd April and the BBC debate on 16th April will be produced and broadcast as planned. They will both be scheduled for 2 hours in peak time starting at 8pm.

The debate on 2nd April is just four days later than the period in which you have expressed a desire to debate and is more than a month before the election.

We very much hope that all invited leaders will participate in the broadcast debates. However, in the end all we can do - as impartial public service broadcasters - is to provide a fair forum for debates to take place. It will always remain the decision of individual leaders whether or not to take part.

The debates will go ahead and we anticipate millions of viewers will find them valuable as they did in 2010. Our invitations will remain open to all the invited leaders right up to broadcast. We'll set no deadlines for final responses. We very much hope all the leaders will participate.

The Heads of News of all four broadcasters would welcome the opportunity to meet Mr Cameron, or his representative, to discuss the debates.

Yours sincerely,

Sue Inglish (BBC)

Michael Jermey (ITV)

Dorothy Byrne (Channel 4)

Jonathan Levy (Sky)

Drug Gang Killed Rivals To Steal Client List

Four drug dealers have been found guilty of ambushing and stabbing to death two rivals to steal their client list.

Aaron Carriere, 21, and Josiah Manful, 20, were lured to a quiet residential road in Leytonstone, east London, where they were "boxed in" by four cars.

They were then stabbed 24 times in less than a minute.

Although there were drugs and cash in the car, only one item was stolen - a phone containing their drug dealing "client list".

Gang members Devonte Campbell, Casey Jones, Alex Bernard and Omar Hassan were all found guilty of two counts of murder and will be sentenced later.

Opening the murder trial last year, prosecutor Lisa Wilding QC said the victims were subjected to a "swift, frenzied, utterly brutal attack" in their black Ford Fiesta on Montague Road.

Despite suffering 11 wounds, Mr Manful managed to get out of the driver's seat to call for help before collapsing.

Both men were pronounced dead at the scene following the attack on 1 March last year.

Each of the defendants played their part in the murders, with some wielding knives, some lending support through physical intimidation and others acting as getaway drivers.

Afterwards, some of the defendants tried to evade capture by dumping cars and fleeing the country.

Mr Carriere was a "successful drugs dealer" who traded in crack cocaine, heroin and cannabis in Leytonstone, jurors heard.

Unbeknown to him, he was the subject of an undercover police probe.

Mr Manful had apparently been worried for his safety and had stashed a lock knife in his boxer shorts, the court heard.

Campbell, Jones, Bernard, and Hassan, all from east London, denied two counts of murder.

Fellow east Londoners Wail Alawi, 23, Abraar Amin, 18, and a 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were cleared.

Missing Boxer: Police Find Body In Monaco

Police investigating the disappearance of a British man in Monaco have found a body.

Passers-by found the body in a ravine in the area in which former boxer Michael Graydon was last seen.

Mr Graydon, who runs a boxing organisation near Bristol, disappeared last month while on a trip to Monaco.

The 29-year-old father of one was last seen in the early hours of 21 February.

He was seen leaving the principality's "pink palace", the official residence of Prince Albert.

Later, CCTV footage appeared to show him running away.

His family have set up social media campaigns as part of the search.

Officials in Monaco said the identity of the body and the cause of death had not been confirmed.

Boko Haram Are Massing For Battle - Reports

Boko Haram militants are gathering en masse in the northeast Nigerian town of Gwoza in preparation for a showdown with international forces, according to an intelligence officer.

The source said security forces from Chad are in the area and moving slowly for fear of harming civilians and because the Islamist group is surrounding the town with landmines.

A woman trapped in Gwoza since it was seized in July told her daughter that last week the group urged civilians to leave the town to avoid being killed in crossfire in an anticipated battle.

Hajiya Adama said her mother said the fighters were releasing young women being held against their will, including some made pregnant during their captivity.

She said her mother left Gwoza last week and escaped to the town of Yola, in the neighbouring state of Adamawa.

Boko Haram declared an Islamic caliphate across a swath of northeast Nigeria last August and continue to kill dozens in suicide bombings and village attacks, though troops from Chad and Nigeria have retaken dozens of towns in recent weeks.

Safety has come at a heavy price for tens of thousands of Nigerians who have fled the fighting and are now sheltering in neighbouring Cameroon.

Many of them scratch around for food and complain bitterly at the shortage of water in the huge refugee camp north of Maroua which is now their home.

Retaking Gwoza would be a major coup for Nigeria and for the campaign of President Goodluck Jonathan for re-election at critical 28 March ballots.

The polls have been delayed for six weeks in the hope the threat from Boko Haram can be more adequately contained.

The six-year conflict in Nigeria has killed an estimated 12,000 people and left 1.6 million people homeless.

Woman Accused Of Kidnapping And Raising Baby

A South African woman who allegedly kidnapped a baby from a hospital and raised her until she was 17 has been released on bail.

The 50-year-old, who lives in Cape Town, was arrested last week after the biological parents of the girl, who will be 18 next month, figured out her identity.

She faces charges of kidnapping and pretending to be the child's mother.

The woman has been ordered to stay away from the girl and not to contact her husband, who is a witness in the trial, the South African Press Association reported.

The girl, who police say is currently in the care of social services, was reunited with her biological parents, Morne and Celeste Nurse, last week.

Unbeknown to her, the girl had befriended her younger biological sister after the two went to the same high school.

Nurses shocked by their resemblance contacted police, who carried out DNA tests that proved she was the baby taken from Groote Schuur hospital in 1997.

Morne Nurse, the girl's biological father, said: "My daughter is back and that's it. Look, she is broken and we will fix it."

The parents said they never gave up hope of being reunited with their daughter.

Each year, her siblings blew out candles on a birthday cake for their missing sister.

The girl, who has not been identified because she is a minor, thanked the public for their support earlier this week.

"Under the circumstances, I am doing fine," she said in a statement read by her lawyer, Ann Skelton of the Centre for Child Law.

The media have been asked not to publish the name of the alleged kidnapper, for fear it could reveal the girl's identity.

She was raised by the accused and her husband as an only child, and lived in the same area as her biological family.

Judith Wasserfall, a friend of the accused, said: "She was blessed, she had everything, she never missed out on anything."

The trial resumes on 29 May.

Boy, 13, Admits Murder After Builder Stabbed

A 13-year-old boy has pleaded guilty to murder after a 53-year-old man was stabbed in a row outside a block of flats.

The child, who cannot be named, admitted the attack on builder Christopher Barry in Edmonton, north London, on 14 December last year.

Mr Barry was said to have been involved in a "minor verbal altercation" with a group of youths, who had tried to get into a party at another property in the block of flats where he lived.

Police said two of the boys had followed him into the block in The Broadway before he was stabbed in the chest.

Medics were unable to save Mr Barry and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The defendant's parents were at court for the five-minute hearing, as were relatives of Mr Barry, who was originally from County Cork in Ireland.

When asked to confirm his name, the boy replied: "Erm ... yes." He spoke to his father briefly before the court clerk put the charge to him.

His 'guilty' plea was almost inaudible.

Dressed in a light blue shirt and grey trousers, he was remanded into custody by judge Anthony Morris.

The judge ordered a pre-sentence report ahead of sentencing on 10 April.

Harrison Ford's Plane Was 'Leaking Fuel'

By Sky News US Team

A doctor who was playing golf when Harrison Ford crashed into the California course says he feared the actor's plane would burst into flames.

"He was obviously moaning and in pain," spinal surgeon Sanjay Khurana said.

"My task, if you will, was to get him out of the airplane in a somewhat urgent manner because the fuel was leaking."

The 72-year-old was flying solo in a World War Two training aircraft when it crashed into Penmar golf course in the Venice area on Thursday afternoon.

Dr Khurana told ABC news: "He's obviously an iconic individual and when he lay there as I was trying to check his airway, his blood pressure, it was obvious by his face it was Harrison Ford."

The plane remained at the crash site on Friday morning as federal aviation investigators tried to determine what made it come down.

The National Transportation Safety Board said at a press conference they have still not spoken to Ford.

In audio with air traffic control, Ford, who was flying at 3,000 feet, can be heard saying in an urgent voice: "Engine failure," before requesting "immediate return" to the airport.

The single-engine plane clipped a tree as it went down shortly after taking off from Santa Monica Airport, about a mile away, the LA Fire Department said.

The yellow vintage aircraft with stars on its wings was upright and mostly intact after the crash. No one on the ground was hurt.

Witnesses were reported by local media as saying the actor was helped out of the plane by several bystanders and that he could use his legs.

Ford's son Ben, who is at his father's bedside in hospital, tweeted: "At the hospital. Dad is OK. Battered but OK!

"He is every bit the man you would think he is. He is an incredibly strong man."

Ford's publicist Ina Treciokas said: "He was banged up and is in the hospital receiving medical care. The injuries sustained are not life-threatening and he is expected to make a full recovery."

NASA Joy As Probe Orbits Dwarf Planet Ceres

The NASA probe Dawn has begun orbiting the dwarf planet Ceres in a major triumph for the US space agency.

It is the first time in the history of space exploration that a probe has made it to a dwarf planet.

"It went exactly the way we expected. Dawn gently, elegantly slid into Ceres' gravitational embrace," said mission chief engineer Marc Rayman at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Ceres, which lies in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, is Dawn's final destination.

It will spend the next 16 months photographing the icy surface after previously exploring the asteroid Vesta.

The probe sent back stunning close-ups of its lumpy surface before moving on to Ceres, which is roughly the size of Texas.

As Dawn approached Ceres, it beamed back puzzling images revealing two bright spots inside a crater - signs of possible ice or salt.

Scientists hope to get a better glimpse when it gets closer to the surface to study whether plumes of water vapour seen earlier are still venting.

Dawn is currently in Ceres' shadows and will not start taking new pictures until it emerges in April, Mr Rayman said.

He added: "The real drama is exploring this alien, exotic world."

Since its launch in 2008, Dawn has travelled three billion miles, made possible by its ion propulsion engines.

They provide gentle, yet constant acceleration and are more efficient than conventional thrusters.

Dwarf planets have recently become the focus of space exploration.

This summer, another NASA spacecraft, New Horizons, is set to make the first visit to Pluto, which has been demoted to dwarf planet.

Dawn almost never got off the ground after funding problems and launch delays.

The seven-year mission has cost $473m (£313m).

Becky Watts: Four More People In Court

By Adele Robinson, Sky News Correspondent

Four more people have been charged in connection with the murder of teenager Becky Watts.

Karl Demetrius and Donovan Demetrius, both 29, along with Jaydene Parsons, 23, all of Barton Court, Bristol, have been charged with assisting an offender.

James Ireland, 23, of Richmond Villas, Avonmouth, faces the same charge.

All four are have been remanded in custody to appear at Bristol Crown Court on the 26th of March.

A fifth person, who was arrested on Monday, has been released without charge.

It comes after Becky's stepbrother Nathan Matthews appeared in crown court for the first time charged with her murder.

Matthews appeared via video link unshaven in a grey sweatshirt and in a hearing that lasted 15 minutes he spoke only to confirm his name.

Prosecutor James Ward told the court: "The allegations of this case have been well-rehearsed in the press recently and I do not propose to go into the finer details.

"There are still people helping the police with their inquiries. Therefore, it would be wrong to place before the media further details about this case.

Mr Ward said police were assessing "at least" 1,200 exhibits in connection with the case. "Much forensic work needs to be done," he said.

Matthews was remanded into custody and will next appear before a judge on 26 March.

On Thursday he appeared before Bristol magistrates with his 21-year-old girlfriend Shauna Hoare.

Hoare is charged with intending to pervert the course of justice and will also appear in Bristol Crown Court on 26 March.

Becky, 16, disappeared from her home in the St George area of Bristol on 19 February.

Police launched a huge search for the teenager and a social media campaign that reached millions of people.

Body parts were later found at a house in the Barton Hill area of the city.

Bouquets, teddies and cards have been left at Becky's home, as well as at Barton Court, and mourners have attended churches across the city to pay their respects.

Leaders' Debates: PM Rejects Broadcasters' Call

Downing Street has insisted the Prime Minister is only willing to take part in one televised leaders' debate before the General Election after four major broadcasters repeated they were planning to stage three.

David Cameron's spokesman was responding after Sky News, Channel 4, the BBC and ITV said they were sticking to their plan of hosting one head-to-head contest between the Prime Minister and Labour leader Ed Miliband and two pitting seven party leaders against each other ahead of polling on 7 May.

Earlier this week, Mr Cameron issued an ultimatum to the organisations, saying he would only agree to take part in a single debate involving seven party leaders in the week beginning 23 March and before the election campaign.

Labour has accused Mr Cameron of trying to "bully" broadcasters into dropping plans for a two-way contest - which Sky News and Channel 4 plan to host.

The four organisations have said this debate needs to take place - as well as the two seven-way debates of a minimum of two hours each, involving the leaders of the Conservatives, Labour, Liberal Democrats, Greens, UKIP, SNP and Plaid Cymru.

But in a response to the broadcasters, spokesman Craig Oliver said: "I made the Prime Minister's final position clear in my last letter - he is willing to do a seven-way debate in the week beginning 23 March.

"Clearly it is disappointing that you are not prepared to take him up on that offer. I am ready to discuss at your convenience the logistics of making the debate we have suggested happen."

Mr Miliband said: "It is make your mind up time for David Cameron. He can keep running from these debates with me and show himself to be a weak leader running from his record.

"Or he can agree to the debates which the British people deserve and that our democracy needs."

Mr Cameron said he would agree to one 90-minute debate of at least seven leaders, and possibly also the DUP in Northern Ireland, before the end of March.

He said: "What I have done is unblock the log jam that I am afraid the broadcasters help to create and said 'let's have the debate that gives everybody a say and let's get on with it before the campaign'."

The Downing Street ultimatum earlier this week was made in a letter sent to Sue Inglish, the chair of the broadcasters' leaders' debates committee, by Mr Cameron's communications director Mr Oliver.

But the broadcasters want their three debates to take place on 2 April (ITV), 16 April (BBC) and 30 April (Sky News and Channel 4) and are urging the Prime Minister to appear in all of them.

They wrote a letter to Mr Oliver, saying: "We have consistently set out our intention to hold three debates during the unusually long formal election campaign period  - 30 March to 7 May 2015.

"We spaced the planned debates two weeks apart, twice the length of time between debates as compared to 2010. The dates - 2 April, 16 April and 30 April - were first published in October 2014 and have not been changed.

"We believe that the formal election period is the right time to hold election debates.

"It is the point at which the parties have published their election manifestos and the point at which the electorate as a whole is most engaged with discussion of election issues and the public debate about the future of the country."

Deputy Prime Minister and Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg called on him to take part in three contests, tweeting: "Come on @David_Cameron you haven't got your own way so accept it and take part. #tvdebates."

UKIP leader Nigel Farage said: I am pleased the broadcasters have stood firm at last. Would have been better to stick to the original proposal which included fewer parties.  Nonetheless accept the challenge."

SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon said: "I will debate David Cameron anytime, anywhere, and on any number of occasions - but a Tory Prime Minister simply cannot be allowed to dictate terms to everyone else."

Peter Robinson of the DUP told Sky News: "I wonder who the broadcasters think they are, that they just set down a diktat and we all follow."

However, he added: "No politician, in my view, if they are given that offer of having that airtime to speak directly to the electorate, will want to miss that opportunity. Certainly I don't."

Sky News and Channel 4 have already said they are prepared to hold the two-way debate on a different date if the leaders of the Labour and Conservative parties can agree.

All four broadcasters said in a statement: "Some 22 million people watched the leaders' debates in 2010 and there is a public desire and expectation for them to happen again in 2015.

"The broadcasters proposals have come after extensive work over the last six months to ensure the public have the opportunity to watch televised election debates once more.

"The group have worked in an independent, impartial manner, treating invited parties on an equitable basis. They have listened to the views expressed by all parties and adapted the proposals to take into account electoral support."

They added: "The broadcasters will continue to work closely with all parties invited to take part in the televised debates to bring them to their millions of viewers across the UK.

"The heads of news of all four broadcasters would welcome the opportunity to meet Mr Cameron, or his representatives, to discuss the debates."

PM: Let's Have Head-To-Head Debate 'Now'

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 05 Maret 2015 | 00.27

The Prime Minister has suggested he is prepared to debate the Labour leader head to head live on television "now".

In angry exchanges during Prime Minister's Questions, David Cameron was asked three times if he would debate with Ed Miliband before the election as he has said.

After the final question Mr Cameron replied: "I have been very clear, I have said get on with the debates before the election campaign begins, I think we should start now."

Mr Miliband had asked him twice before his final answer saying: "One thing he wants to avoid is a TV debate between me and him."

Mr Cameron had responded that in Prime Minister's Questions Mr Miliband had failed to score points on a number of important issues.

Sky News and Channel 4 have proposed to host a head-to-head between the two candidates for Prime Minister, Mr Cameron and Mr Miliband on April 30.

A Sky News and Channel 4 spokesman said: "Sky News and Channel 4 are continuing to prepare for a head-to-head debate between the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition on 30th April.

"However, in response to media inquiries following today's PMQs, we would obviously be willing to host a debate on a different date the two main party leaders could agree on."

The BBC and ITV have proposed each staging a debate involving Mr Cameron, Mr Miliband, Nick Clegg, the Greens' Natalie Bennett, Nigel Farage of UKIP, the SNP's Nicola Sturgeon and Plaid Cymru's Leanne Wood.

Microsoft Co-Founder Finds Battleship Wreckage

The wreckage of a massive Japanese battleship which was sunk during World War 2 has been discovered by a research team led by Microsoft's co-founder.

The technologically advanced Musashi sank during the battle of Leyte off the Philippines more than 70 years ago.

Paul Allen and his research team found the ship on Sunday, more than eight years after their search began.

The Musashi was one of the largest battleships in history and was found as the world marks the 70th anniversary of the war's end.

The ship was commissioned in 1942 and sank in October 1944 in the Sibuyan Sea during the battle, losing half of its 2,400 crew members.

Mr Allen and his team were aboard his super-yacht M/Y Octopus when the discovery was made, using an autonomous underwater vehicle.

Detailed images captured by a high-definition camera mounted on the underwater probe confirmed the wreckage as that of the Musashi.

Mr Allen said: "The Musashi is truly an engineering marvel and as an engineer at heart, I have a deep appreciation for the technology and effort that went into its construction."

He said his interest in the war was inspired by his father's service, adding that he was "honoured" to play a part in finding the vessel.

He plans to work with Japan's government to treat the area of sea as a war grave.

A memorial service could be held at the site in future.

The Battle of Leyte, one of the biggest naval battles in history, ended in a decisive victory for the Allies.

Video: Islamic State-Themed Wedding Party

An Egyptian bride and groom were placed in a cage by masked men brandishing knives as part of an Islamic State-themed wedding.

The video, which was shot in Menoufia, Egypt, begins with a wedding attendant with his face covered conducting as a jihadi anthem used in propaganda released by the militants is played.

He then leads the bride and groom into the cage, similar to that used in the horrific video of Jordanian pilot Mu'ath Al Kassasbeh being burned alive in February.

Inside the newlywed break into dance along with the masked attendants as other guests clap and cheer them on.

The idea was apparently thought up by the groom, who had told his bride-to-be he was planning something different for the wedding.

Only the groom, his attendants and the photographer, Ahmed Kassem, knew of the plan beforehand.

As the scene unfolded, some guests believed the wedding was being stormed by IS militants, according to the Youm7 newspaper.

Last month, footage emerged showing the beheading of 21 Egyptian Coptic Christians by IS militants in Libya.

Egypt responded by bombing IS camps, training sits and weapons storage areas along the border with Libya.

Teacher 'Planned Multiple Attacks' For IS

By Becky Johnson, North Of England Correspondent

A chemistry teacher from Manchester was "preparing himself to commit multiple acts of murder" fighting with Islamic State, a court has heard.

Jamshed Javeed was one of a group of young Muslim men from Manchester who became radicalised and determined to fight jihad in Syria.

At an earlier hearing he pleaded guilty to two counts of engaging in conduct in preparation of terrorist acts.

But he maintained that he was not an extremist and had never supported the aims of IS, instead intending to join rebels fighting the Assad regime.

The sentencing hearing at Woolwich Crown Court is expected to last two days.

The 30-year-old paid for flights for his brother Mohammad to travel to Syria with a friend to fight with IS.

Javeed, who was a teacher at Sharples School in Bolton, intended to join them, the court heard.

He bought clothing, equipment and flight tickets to travel to Turkey in November 2013. He was due to travel with friend Nur Hassan and, the night before, he gave him a computer hard drive onto which Hassan loaded violent extremist material.

Hassan was stopped at Manchester airport and police seized his phone, laptop and the hard drive. He missed his flight but travelled the next day.

Javeed, however, was unable to travel with him because his family, who were growing increasingly concerned about his radicalisation, had hidden his passport and bag.

Undeterred by the pleas of his family and pregnant wife, Javeed applied for a new passport, but was arrested before he was able to travel.

When police detained him in December 2013 they found extreme Islamist material on his mobile phones and computers.

Prosecutor Simon Dennison QC said it was clear the action Javeed intended to engage in "would have involved the use of firearms and/or explosives".

He said: "This case, of course, is not about who is right, and who is wrong, in the conflict in Syria - as if anyone could say.

"It is not about humanitarian aid. Nor is it about the religion of Islam.

"It is about the defendant assisting others in preparing, and preparing himself, to commit multiple acts of murder in guerrilla warfare to advance their religious or ideological cause."

Embarrassment For Prince At Elephant Sanctuary

By Mark Stone, Asia Correspondent

Prince William's trip to China has ended with embarrassment after he visited an animal sanctuary where elephants are forced to perform for tourists nearby.

At the same moment that the Prince was being photographed with an elephant, others were waiting in enclosures less than a mile away with their legs shackled.

The Prince is in Yunnan Province on the last leg of his tour of China. His visit to this far southwestern province was supposed to help highlight a cause close to him: the fight to conserve and save endangered species and highlight the trade in endangered wildlife.

Sky News spent an hour at the show in which we watched tourists sitting on elephants trunks and riding on them. The animals, some wearing giant spectacles, sat down and balanced on tiny stools. Others kicked around footballs.

The show lasts an hour, happens twice a day and is watched by hundreds of Chinese tourists.

Sky News asked the Prince if he was aware the elephant entertainment was taking place down the road. He turned around but did not respond.

Some 250 elephants live in Wild Elephant Valley near a town called Xishuangbanna. They represent the only 'wild' Asian elephants in China. However from what Sky News witnessed, many of them cannot be classed as living in the wild.

Prince William, who is the patron of the Tusk Trust, wanted to use his last day here to learn more about China's role in fighting the illegal trade in wildlife.

Speaking to journalists at the sanctuary about the global illegal wildlife trade, the Duke said: "It is appalling that elephants and many others may be extinct in the wild in our lifetimes, and we seem to be hurtling towards the tragic outcome.

"The extinction of animals such as elephants, rhinos and pangolins would be an immeasurable loss to the whole of humanity."

Conservation groups agree that China is the main protagonist in the trade, with tonnes of ivory smuggled into the country from Africa.

While there is no suggestion that the elephant William met or those performing are affected by the illegal trade, they are not living in the wild and are trained to entertain.

Conservationists Sky News spoke to expressed surprise that palace officials would allow William to be seen to endorse a centre at which elephants perform.

Fleur Dawes from Animal Defenders International said: "'Using animals for entertainment in any sphere is completely wrong and fosters disrespect for the animals.

"What we want is to protect these animals in their wild and natural environment. Reducing them to caricatures simply undermines that message.

"So we would urge Prince William and all of the royal family to really bear that in mind. You simply cannot recreate the kind of natural environment in a wild life park where animals are forced to perform."

A three-year study by the World Animal Protection in 2014 into the welfare of captive elephants in Asia concluded that entertainment venues where elephants are forced into unnatural performances often causes them pain and suffering.

Canadians Asked To Stop 'Spocking' Bank Notes

Canadians have been asked to stop drawing Leonard Nimoy-inspired Mr Spock pictures on their $5 bank notes.

For years, fans of the famous Star Trek character have been scribbling on the face of former PM Wilfrid Laurier - Canada's first Francophone prime minister - on $5 banknotes.

This gathered pace last week with the death of the actor.

Canada's central bank said earlier in the week that it was not illegal to add Spock's pointy Vulcan ears, sharp eyebrows and signature bowl haircut to the notes.

However, it did encourage citizens to stop their scribbling.

Bank spokeswoman Josianne Menard said in an email: "There are important reasons why it should not be done."

She went on to explain the bank believed it was "inappropriate" to deface the banknote because it was a "Canadian symbol and source of national pride".

The acceleration of the trend followed the actor's death on Friday with social media users posting their own versions of Laurier's Vulcan makeover in honour of their hero.

"Spock your $5 bills for Leonard Nimoy," the Canadian Design Resource tweeted on its posting while Simon Williams tweeted: "I've had a beat up Canadian 5 buried in my wallet for years, finally found a use for it!"

Images of the altered bills were circulated widely online and attracted international media attention.

Calgary artist Tom Bagley, who posted his own Spock-Laurier hybrid on Facebook and Flickr after Nimoy's death, said the original idea came about as an old bar trick to impress a waitress and he did not see anything wrong with it.

"I always thought it was OK as long as the numbers were intact - it still counted as money," he said.

"That's what I heard. Because stuff happens like, say, you spill spaghetti sauce all over it or something like that."

A mother and her lesbian lover have been found guilty of killing an eight-year-old girl during their affair.

Polly Chowdhury, 35, and Kiki Muddar, 43, were convicted at the Old Bailey on Wednesday of the manslaughter of Chowdhury's daughter Ayesha Ali.

Both women held their heads in their hands as the verdicts were read out.

The cause of the girl's death was recorded as a head injury, but Ayesha had suffered more than 50 injuries, including a bite mark on her shoulder and carpet burns. When paramedics found her she had been dead for some time.

During proceedings, the court was told how the women's affair revolved around fictional Facebook characters that Muddar used to control Chowdhury.

The jury was also told how the little girl was terrorised at night by the women wearing nightmarish masks.

IS Militants Linked To Cold-Calling Scam

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of money laundering by police investigating an alleged scam by extremists travelling to Syria.

Police said the fraud targeted "unsuspecting vulnerable and elderly victims" who were called at home by a person claiming to be a police officer.

The caller told them their bank account had been compromised and encouraged them to transfer money to an account under the control of the fraudsters.

One elderly man lost approximately £150,000 as a result of the fraud.

The two men - aged 23 and 29 - were arrested during searches at addresses in west and east London earlier today.

They are being held at a police station in south London.

Officers from the Counter Terrorism Command (SO15) also executed search warrants at two addresses in north London, one in west London and one in southeast London.

Searches at all six addresses are ongoing, according to a statement released by the Met Police.

The statement added that people should be aware of cold-calling scams and never share their pin number over the phone.

"Members of the public are strongly advised, if you receive a call like this from someone claiming to be a police officer, (to) hang up the phone," it said.

"(Then) wait at least five minutes to make sure the phone line has cleared, or use another phone line, before ringing the phone number on your bank card."

Sky's Mark White said: "It's part of a huge investigation into large-scale fraud that is being used to fund extremists travelling out to Syria to fight alongside the likes of Islamic State.

"You would think that people probably wouldn't fall for this, and I'm sure that most people don't.

"But vulnerable, unsuspecting, elderly people sometimes do."

Boston marathon bombing accused Dzhokhar Tsarnaev "had murder in his heart" when he took part in the deadly attack, a prosecutor has said.

In the much anticipated trial's opening statements on Wednesday, federal prosecutors said the accused had wanted to "tear people apart and create a bloody spectacle".

Tsarnaev, 21, wearing a white shirt without tie, and a blazer, stared straight ahead as the case against him was laid out amid tight security at the US District Court in Boston.

The defence made a surprising admission, acknowledging the accused's guilt.

But they argued that he was heavily influenced by his 26-year-old brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev.
