Black Friday Stampede At UK Shopping Centre

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 30 November 2013 | 00.48

A woman was taken to hospital and a pregnant woman was pushed over after a stampede over cut-price televisions.

There were also claims that pensioners were knocked to the ground by frantic shoppers battling to get their hands on Christmas deals at the Asda store in west Belfast.

A spokesman for the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service confirmed they were called to the Westwood Centre at about 8.30am and took a woman with an arm injury to the nearby Royal Victoria Hospital for treatment.

Chaotic scenes also erupted at a number of other Asda outlets across the region.

Hundreds of customers who had queued from the early hours of this morning became irate after being told the limited number of discounted televisions and tablet computers had sold out within minutes.

One woman who was caught up in the mayhem in west Belfast described the scenes as frightening.

"It was just a free-for-all. It was frightening," she said. "People were getting trailed to the ground. People were arguing with people. Two of my friends were injured."

The woman claimed one friend was kicked in the stomach by a man who tried to grab a TV out of her hand.

"The other one, who is disabled, was actually kicked to the ground and trampled on and now has a broken arm and is waiting to hear if she is going to need surgery next week," she said.

TVs were reduced from £179 to £99 as part of Asda's "Black Friday" special offers that were advertised throughout the UK.

People formed queues from about 1am for the deals, which started at 8am.

In the Westwood outlet there were just 24 of the 32-inch television sets on sale at the reduced prices.

Another customer said tensions at the Asda Living shop in the Citygate Shopping Centre in north Belfast almost spilled over into violence.

He said staff were verbally abused by outraged customers who were told the shop had not received any of the discounted items.

"People were just irate. I honestly thought it was going to be a digging match (fight)," he said.

In a statement Asda described the response to its first Black Friday deal as phenomenal.

A spokeswoman said: "This is the first time Black Friday has been done on this scale in stores across the UK and our customers were eager to take advantage of the great offers available to them. We planned for high demand and the half a million Black Friday products on offer to our customers have been selling quickly since 8am.

"Throughout the event, the safety of our customers is of vital importance and to ensure our stores can cope with the extra footfall we have full security teams in our stores and extra colleagues to help assist customers in the aisles."

Germany: 'Cannibal Cop' Buried Victim In Garden

A German policeman has been arrested after the butchered body of a man he met on a fetish website for cannibalism was found buried in his garden.

The 55-year-old confessed to slashing the throat of his willing victim and then cutting his body into small pieces and burying them, police said.

But there was no evidence that the suspect, identified by media as police officer Detlev G of the eastern state of Saxony, had eaten any of the body parts of his victim, prosecutors said.

Police Suspect Cannibalism In Recent Murder Maik Mainda laid out the details of the investigation at a news conference

The victim, a 59-year-old man from Hanover, Lower Saxony, had "since his youth fantasised about being murdered and eaten," Dresden police chief Dieter Kroll told a news conference.

When the Hanover business consultant went missing, police began a search and weeks later tracked him down using his electronic communications with the suspected killer, whom he met for the first time on November 4.

Dresden head of criminal investigations Maik Mainda told the press conference the pair had extensive email, SMS and telephone contact since October to arrange their fatal date.

The two men met at Dresden railway station before driving back to the suspect's house in the town of Hartmannsdorf-Reichenau.

"The agreement was that the killing should take place immediately," Mainda said.

The suspect "then used a knife to cause a life-threatening wound on the throat of the victim, which led to his death," he said.

He added: "The suspect has told us that he then cut the victim into separate pieces, including many very small pieces, and that he also cut through bones. The suspect then buried the body parts on the sloping lawn of his property."

The suspect was cooperating and had pointed investigators to the sites where he buried the remains, police said.

The investigation has echoes of the case of Armin Meiwes, dubbed the "Cannibal of Rothenburg".

Armin Meiwes Armin Meiwes admitted killing and eating a lover in 2001

In 2001, German cannibal Meiwes made international headlines for admitting to killing, mutilating and eating the flesh of a lover whom he had met on the Internet via an advertisement looking for a "slaughter victim".

Meiwes was originally convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to eight and a half years in prison in 2004, but another court found him guilty of murder in a retrial and jailed him for life.

British Couple Killed In French Port Accident

A British couple have been killed after their car was crushed between two trucks on a road leading from a ferry port in Dunkirk.

The accident happened just after the couple's car had disembarked from a ferry at Loon-Plage, police said.

One of the trucks had stopped suddenly on a road leading from the disembarkation point to highway A16 around 11.30am local time (10.30 GMT).

The second rammed the couple's car from behind, trapping it between the two trucks, police said.

The couple were both aged in their fifties. No further details of their identities were available.

The Polish truck driver who hit their car and suffered minor injuries told officers he had been unable to stop in time.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office say they are aware of two British deaths in France and stand ready to offer consular assistance.

A spokeswoman for DFDS Seaways, which operates a service between Dover and Dunkirk, said: "We can confirm that a road traffic incident occurred in the port of Dunkirk on Friday 29 November and fatalities have been reported.

"Police are investigating the incident, which took place on the main road leading into the terminal. We are unable to comment on this whilst French police onquiries are taking place."

The spokeswoman could not confirm if the two British people had been passengers on a DFDS ferry.

Dog Found In Rubble Nine Days After Tornado

A dog has been pulled from the rubble of an apartment destroyed by a tornado after its ears were spotted sticking up from the debris.

Owner Jacob Montgomery said he experienced "crazy relief" when Dexter was discovered alive nine days after tornado in Washington, Illinois.

"Apparently he waited in the apartment for nine days. I don't know how or why he did that, but he just did," he told the Sun Times newspaper.

The building's roof and walls had been blown away by the tornado on November 17.

The six-month-old pit bull was found on the floor near the spot where the kitchen sink had ended up.

An aerial view shows the path of destruction caused by a tornado that touched down in Washington, Illinois, More than 1,000 homes were destroyed as a tornado hit Washington

The dog "was emaciated," said Randy Wheat, head of the group Rescuing Animals in Need of Central Illinois which found him.

"You could see his ribs. That said, he checked out OK. He had nothing to eat and drink except snow," he said.

He said one of his volunteers spotted the dog when he "saw his ears sticking up".

Mr Montgomery, a member of the Illinois National Guard, was not at home at the time of the tornado.

He said when he was reunited with Dexter as soon as the dog saw him "his tail started going".

Sarah Ripper, from the clinic that treated Dexter, told Sky News: "He's doing good. He's getting back into a normal routine.

"He lost quite a bit of weight and is gaining some back.

"He had a couple of scrapes but is doing much better."

Bodies In Home Of Woman 'Not Seen For Decades'

A woman not seen by neighbours for more than 30 years has been found dead at her home in Oxford, with the body of her daughter nearby.

Police broke into the terraced property after reports of a pungent smell and initially recovered the body of daughter Caroline Jessett.

She is thought to have been dead for several months.

However, officers were unable to go upstairs amid fears the property could collapse and engineers spent a week shoring up the walls.

When police returned yesterday, they discovered the body of mother Pauline Jessett, in her 70s, in an upstairs room.

Sources suspect she may have been dead for months, or even years.

Post-mortem examinations are being carried out and the deaths are so far unexplained.

Neighbours, in Cowley Road, Littlemore, south Oxford, described both women as reclusive and some said they had not seen Pauline Jessett for 30 years.

They told journalists that the curtains at the home were always drawn and the Jessetts refused to answer calls at the front door.

One neighbour, who did not want to be named, told reporters she had not seen Pauline since the 1980s when her husband had died.

Caroline had not been spotted for at least six months and also rarely ventured out, the neighbour added.

Photographs at the property revealed an overgrown garden and furniture piled up inside the house.

Investigating officer Detective Inspector John Turner said: "There continues to be nothing at this stage to suggest these deaths are suspicious.

"Investigations are now being carried out to determine the circumstances."

Mairead Philpott's Appeal Refused By Judge

Mairead Philpott has lost her appeal against the 17-year prison sentence imposed for the killing of her six children.

Mairead Philpott, 33, was jailed alongside her husband Mick at Nottingham Crown Court in April after being found guilty of the manslaughter of Jade Philpott and her brothers John, Jack, Jesse, Jayden and Duwayne.

There was applause from the public gallery as Court of Appeal judges sitting at Nottingham Crown Court dismissed a renewed application by Philpott to challenge her jail term.

Mick Philpott was jailed for life with a minimum term of 15 years after being branded a "disturbingly dangerous" man.

His wife, who is likely to be released after serving half of her 17-year term, took part in a plan to set fire to the couple's home in Victory Road in an effort to frame his former mistress.

The children were aged between five and 13.

Members of Mairead's family including her mother Vera, father Jimmy and sisters Bernadette and Jennifer, were in the public gallery for the hearing. Mairead Philpott was not in court.

Setting out Philpott's grounds of appeal, her barrister Shaun Smith QC said: "The essence is the utter dependence of Mairead Philpott on Mick Philpott, whilst not excusing culpability, legally or morally, was not given sufficient weight in assessing the length of her sentence."

He said Mairead was "particularly vulnerable" to a man like Philpott who specialised in taking advantage of young girls with no family support or self esteem.

Mr Smith said Mairead, who had been a loving mother, would forever be known as a child killer and that her sentence would be "a lifetime reminder of her inability to stand up to a disturbingly dangerous man".

The court heard co-accused Paul Mosley had abandoned an appeal of the length of his sentence.

Dismissing the appeal, The Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, said there was "no doubt" Philpott had loved her children but that as their mother she had a responsibility to them.

Lord Thomas dismissed Mr Smith's claims that she could not stand up for herself against her husband.

"This was not a spur of the moment plan. The risks of pouring petrol inside a building must have been obvious.

"She participated in the setting of the fire as petrol was found on her clothes.

"Her conduct after arrest was one where she continued to maintain the lie that others were responsible.

"It may be that she was under the continuing domination of Michael Philpott."

"It is extremely difficult to understand that during that custody time and the lengthy trial she did not admit the truth, expose the lie and own up to abusing her responsibilities.

Philpott house demolition The house at Victory Road being demolished

"She was capable of standing up. She could make a choice. She had a responsibility that was not overborne by the will of Michael Philpott."

The decision comes after she lost the first round of a bid to challenge the length of her sentence in July.

The hearing was the first to be held outside London since legislation was passed to allow Court of Appeal hearings to be broadcast.

Philpott's father Jimmy Duffy said outside court that he believed his daughter should have been given a life sentence.

He also told reporters his daughter had ignored his last letter and "has nothing to do with us".

Mr Duffy said: "There is love there because she is my flesh and blood, but I'll never forgive her for what she's done."

He added: "At the beginning I said that the whole trio should've got a life sentence."

Speaking to Sky News, Mick Philpott's former partner Kim Hill said: "At first I didn't realise he was controlling.

"He could play mind games very well. I've never come across anybody like him before."

He went on to attack her, leaving her in intensive care for eight weeks, and he was jailed for three years.

"He's scum. The impact on my life ... each day's different. I still think he should have got six life sentences so he would never get out."

Saatchi: I Do Not Know If Nigella Took Drugs

Charles Saatchi has told a court he does not know if he believes allegations his ex-wife Nigella Lawson was a habitual drug user.

Speaking at Isleworth Crown Court, the art dealer said he was "utterly bereft" that a private email he sent the celebrity chef referring to her being "off her head" on drugs has been made public.

"If you ask me whether I actually knew whether Nigella ever took drugs, the answer is no," Mr Saatchi added as he gave evidence in west London, where his two former personal assistants are on trial accused of fraud.

Italian sisters Elisabetta and Francesca Grillo allegedly used credit cards loaned to them by the celebrity couple to spend more than £685,000 on holidays and luxury items.

Questioned about the email by prosecutor Jane Carpenter, Mr Saatchi said: "I'm utterly bereft that this private email to Nigella has come back to haunt us both. That's all I have to say.

"The stories that the Grillos were parading was that Nigella had a severe cocaine habit that stretched back a very long time for the entirety of our marriage.

Elisabetta (left) and Francesca Grillo (right) Elisabetta and Francesca Grillo deny the allegations against them

"What I was speculating here was that the Grillos would use this as a defence."

Sky's senior news correspondent Ian Woods, outside court, reported that Mr Saatchi said he had never seen any evidence that Ms Lawson used drugs but that he had questioned other members of the household about whether the allegations were true.

Mr Saatchi later said: "I have never, never seen any evidence of Nigella taking any drug whatsoever.

"I want to be helpful, but I genuinely have no real knowledge at all."

The couple went through a high-profile divorce earlier this year and Mr Saatchi told the court he was "heartbroken to have lost Nigella".

"I wish the last year had never happened," he added.

The defence barrister handed Mr Saatchi photos from outside Scott's restaurant in Mayfair, where he appeared to have his hands on Ms Lawson's neck.

He said: "I was not gripping, strangling or throttling her. I was holding her head by the neck to make her focus, can we be clear?"

The 70-year-old said it had been Ms Lawson's idea to give the sisters credit cards and that they did most of the family's personal shopping as part of their roles as assistants.

He told the jury that when he saw the amounts being spent he thought the Grillo sisters had been "naughty" and had wanted to put the matter behind them whereas Ms Lawson wanted to call the police.

Earlier the jury heard from the couple's accountant Rahul Gajjar who said he had increased the sisters' credit limit to £100,000 without telling the art dealer.

Mr Gajjar, 44, said there was "lax control" of spending on cards issued to staff.

Mr Saatchi told the court: "I've very bad at finances. I don't take any interest at all."

Mr Saatchi said the "slavery story" - the defendants complained they were "being treated worse than Filipino slaves" - was "nonsense".

He said Miss Lawson was a "very, very nice employer", adding: "The staff all adored her."

He denied that Ms Lawson would have told her staff to spend whatever they wanted.

'Trafficking Victims' Rescued By Police In Leeds

Police say 17 men, women and children have been rescued from exploitation as part of an investigation into human trafficking in Leeds.

Eight people have also been arrested as part of the probe.

Many of those rescued were from Slovakia and were found living in poor conditions with "little if any" income mainly in the south and west of the city, West Yorkshire Police said.

Others were being forced to work long hours for little or no pay, police said.

The three-day operation saw 60 officers, supported by Leeds City Council staff, health agencies, Hope for Justice and the Salvation Army, visit 25 addresses across Leeds, to offer help to families identified as being potential victims.

They took three men, four women and 19 children to a reception centre where they were given access to the services of the relevant agencies.

A total of 17 of those people have been placed into the National Referral Mechanism, which identifies victims of human trafficking and ensures they receive protection and support.

Another 33 people approached during the operation "preferred not to cooperate and remained where they were", police said.

A police spokesman said officers began investigating an organised criminal gang in September thought to be behind human trafficking, large-scale benefit fraud and labour exploitation in Leeds and elsewhere.

The eight people arrested have been bailed, and enquiries are continuing to trace others believed to be involved.

Senior Investigating Officer Detective Chief Inspector Andy Williams said: "We hope this will send a message to those who are involved in this type of activity and give other victims confidence that the authorities can provide the help and support they need to escape from their situations.

"Our criminal investigation into these matters is ongoing and we expect to make further arrests as part of our efforts to bring those responsible to justice."

Woolwich Trial: 'Killer Nearly Beheaded Soldier'

Lee Rigby's mother and widow have left the Old Bailey in tears after hearing how the soldier was nearly decapitated outside a primary school.

Relatives fled the packed Old Bailey courtroom moments before the jury was shown video footage of the soldier being hit by a car, driven by the alleged killers.

There were gasps from the public gallery as the video showed a Vauxhall Tigra knocking the soldier down before crashing into a road sign.

The court was told that the two men then got out of the car, dragged the unconscious soldier into the street and attacked him with a meat cleaver and knives.

Trial Begins For The Murder OF Fusilier Lee Rigby Lee Rigby's widow Rebecca arrives at the Old Bailey

The defendants chose to mutilate the soldier in the middle of the road, just yards from a primary school, so people could watch, the court was told.

One witness account, read in court by prosecutor Richard Whittam QC, described how one man "knelt down" by Fusilier Rigby and took hold of his hair.

He then "repeatedly hacked at the right side of his neck", the jury was told.

Another witness described him as being "like a butcher attacking a joint of meat", Mr Whittam added.

Jurors were also shown a phone camera video clip of one of the alleged killers, Michael Adebolajo, speaking with blood on his hands.

He says: "The only reason we've killed this man today is because Muslims are dying daily by British soldiers.

"This British soldier is one - he is an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth."

Speaking into the camera, he went on: "I apologise that women had to witness this today but in our lands our women have to see the same.

Trial Begins For The Murder Of Fusilier Lee Rigby Lee's mother Lyn left the court in tears after hearing some of the evidence

"You people will never be safe. Remove your governments - they don't care about you.

"Do you think David Cameron is going to get caught in the street? When we start busting our guns, do you think your politicians are going to die? No, it's going to be the average guy, like you and your children.

"So get rid of them. Tell them to bring our troops back so you can all live in peace. Leave our lands and you will live in peace."

More video footage allegedly showed Adebolajo in an Argos store buying five knives on the day before the attack.

BRITAIN-ATTACKS-MILITARY-MURDER The death of soldier Lee Rigby triggered a massive police investigation

On the opening day of the trial, the Old Bailey was told how Mr Rigby was hit by the car from behind as he walked back to Woolwich Barracks on May 22.

Mr Whittam told jurors that Adebolajo, 28, and Michael Adebowale, 22, drove a car "straight at" him at around 30mph to 40mph.

"Both men then dragged his body into the middle of the road," he said.

"They wanted members of the public to see the consequence of what can only be described as their barbarous acts.

Lee Rigby The soldier was dragged into the middle of the road before being attacked

"They had committed, you may think, a cowardly and callous murder by deliberately attacking an unarmed man in plain clothes from behind, using a vehicle as a weapon, and then they murdered him and mutilated his body with that meat cleaver and knives."

Adebolajo clutched a copy of the Koran in the dock as the jury was told how he tried to decapitate the soldier while Adebowale stabbed and cut him.

"They both attacked the motionless body of Lee Rigby," Mr Whittam said.

"He was repeatedly stabbed and it appears it was Michael Adebolajo, the first defendant, who made a serious and almost successful attempt to decapitate Lee Rigby with multiple blows to his neck made with the meat cleaver."

Members of Lee Rigby's family Member of Lee Rigby's family arrive at the Old Bailey

The court heard that the two men, who deny murder, were also armed with a gun.

Mr Whittam told the jury of eight women and four men that the firearm was part of the plan the pair had made.

It was used partly to frighten off members of the public before the emergency services arrived, the court heard.

Mr Whittam said that as a police vehicle swung into Artillery Place, both men moved towards it and Adebolajo raised the meat cleaver above his head.

The jury was shown CCTV and mobile phone footage of three armed police officers arriving at the scene in a marked BMW.

The officers - two men and one woman - are seen running from their car before one shoots Adebowale and another uses a Taser on Adebolajo.

Adebolajo and Adebowale both deny murdering Fusilier Rigby, attempting to murder a police officer and conspiracy to murder a police officer on or before May 22.

The trial continues.

'Bedroom Tax' Leaves Disabled Fearing Eviction

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 28 November 2013 | 00.27

By Jason Farrell, Sky News Correspondent

Thousands of disabled people are cutting back on food and heating to pay for the so-called "bedroom tax", according to a group of leading charities.

The chief executives of leading groups including Disability Rights UK, Scope, Carers UK, The Royal National Institute of Blind People and the Council For Disabled Children say the policy is having a "devastating impact" on people with disabilities.

More than 50 organisations have signed a letter to Iain Duncan Smith calling for immediate action to exempt disabled people from the Spare Room Subsidy.

They claim that it is harder for people in adapted housing to move and that "it is hitting disabled people who need an extra room for essential home adaptations or equipment which enable them to live independently".

The letter to the Department of Work and Pensions states: "We have been deeply frustrated at reports that disabled people and their families are protected from this policy.

Campaigners Protest Against The Government's Impending 'Bedroom' Tax The introduction of the "bedroom tax" has proved controversial

"The stark evidence since the policy was implemented in April clearly shows they are not.

"None of these groups are exempt and our organisations are seeing the devastating impact it is having on those who now face a shortfall in their rent as a result of the changes."

The Government does offer help with extra discretionary housing payments (DHPs) for disabled social housing tenants.

However, the letter points to research conducted by the Papworth Trust which showed that one in three disabled people applying for DHPs are refused, the same number as non-disabled people, and that 90% of disabled people refused a DHP are already cutting back on food, drink, household bills and medication or therapies.

Iain Duncan Smith Charities have written to Iain Duncan Smith about the bedroom tax

The letter claims that carers and families of disabled children are "being forced deeper and deeper into debt and falling behind on their rent, putting them at risk of eviction".

Sky News spoke to 47-year-old Heather Simpson from Battersea who suffers from a degenerative disease and needs an adapted property with wheelchair access and a stair-lift.

She has been told by her local housing association that it is unable to find her an appropriate smaller home.

Come December she is worried she may have to find an additional £80 a month to cover her spare room.

She told Sky News: "I'm stuck basically, there's nowhere for me to go.

"I understand there's overcrowding, but there's nowhere for me to go. So I'll just get into debt."

Spare room Council tenants judged to have extra bedrooms now receive less benefit

In a letter sent to Heather last week, her Housing Association, Peabody, said it had 1,600 applicants for rehousing and only 145 places.

In a statement, Peabody told Sky News: "The Government's under-occupancy charge has a significant impact on vulnerable people, and we are working with other housing associations and councils to try and increase the options for people needing to move …

"We would like to see the Government take action to mitigate the impact of this policy particularly for the most vulnerable residents in our homes."

A Department of Work and Pensions spokesperson told Sky News: "We are determined to support those who might need extra help through these necessary reforms.

"That is why we set aside £190m this year to do precisely this, with £25m specifically for disabled people living in specially adapted properties.

"The courts have ruled we are meeting our equality duties to disabled people who are affected by the policy.

"The removal of the spare room subsidy means we still pay the majority of most claimants' rent, but the taxpayer can no longer afford to pay the £500m cost of claimants' extra bedrooms."

Berlusconi Expelled From Italian Parliament

Italy's former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi has been expelled from parliament following his criminal conviction for tax fraud.

The Senate voted to strip him of his seat, hours after he gave a defiant speech to supporters outside his palazzo in Rome.

He denounced the day of the vote as one "of mourning for democracy" and told the crowd of hundreds: "In these past 20 years, if there's one thing I can't complain about it's your closeness (and) your affection."

ITALY-POLITICS-BERLUSCONI-SUPPORTERS Supporters wore masks and waved flags as they gathered for a rally in Rome

Mr Berlusconi was convicted in August of manipulating tax bills for his television empire Mediaset.

A court heard he was behind a scheme to purchase the rights to broadcast US movies on his TV networks through a series of offshore companies, and had falsely declared the payments to avoid taxes.

The billionaire was sentenced to four years in jail, which was reduced to one year and will likely be served as community service, and banned from holding public office for two years.

A person holds a banner with a picture of former Italian Prime Minister Berlusconi during a demonstration supporting him, in downtown Rome Hundreds of supporters gathered outside Mr Berlusconi's palazzo

He claimed he did not receive a fair trial and that judges were trying to "eliminate" him from public office.

The loss of his seat will deprive Mr Berlusconi, who is fighting a conviction for paying for sex with a minor among other legal cases, of his parliamentary immunity from arrest.

In June, the three-time prime minister was found guilty of paying for sex with underage prostitute Karima El Mahroug, also known as Ruby the Heart Stealer.

Moroccan-born dancer Karima El Mahroug Dancer Karima El Mahroug, known as Ruby the Heart Stealer

During his trial, the court in Milan heard dozens of young women, including Miss El Mahroug, who was 17 at the time, were paid with cash and cars to attend his so-called "bunga bunga" parties and dance semi-naked for him.

His lawyers said it was "completely unrealistic" he will be arrested over the case.

Although Mr Berlusconi will not hold a seat in parliament, he is expected to remain influential in Italian politics.

He pulled his party out of Mr Letta's ruling coalition earlier this year, accusing opponents of a "coup d'etat" to get rid of him.

He has relaunched his Forza Italia movement and some analysts suggest he still commands millions of supporters.

Louis Vuitton Moscow Trunk Stunt Backfires

French luxury brand Louis Vuitton has been ordered to remove a giant trunk put up as a publicity stunt in Moscow's Red Square after it triggered outrage among Russians.

The boxy brown suitcase-shaped pavilion, covered with the brand's signature stencilling, was erected 10 days ago just outside GUM, a 19th century upmarket department store.

It lies across from the Kremlin that faces the square, and many tourists and Russians complained it was blocking views of most landmark sites.

The once omnipotent Communist Party was outraged by its proximity to Lenin's tomb, and preservationists stressed that Red Square is a Unesco World Heritage Site.

On Wednesday, following several days of furious media commentary, the GUM store said it had asked Louis Vuitton to take down the pavilion.

It was never entirely clear who had granted permission as the square is under official jurisdiction of the Kremlin.

But a Kremlin source told Russian news agencies that the structure was "not agreed with the presidential administration".

A giant Louis Vuitton trunk rises on Red Square in Moscow was ordered to be taken down The giant pavilion was erected last week

The Kremlin's Office of Presidential Affairs, which oversees Red Square, also said it had nothing to do with the trunk.

Spokesman Viktor Khrekov said: "The GUM (store) dealt with the permission issues. We had nothing to do with it."

GUM said on its website: "Considering the view of some of the public, and the fact that the pavilion's size has surpassed the agreed parameters, we told Louis Vuitton about the need to immediately dismantle the pavilion."

Red Square, the formal street address of both the Lenin Mausoleum and the Christ the Saviour Cathedral, is by far the most heavily policed spot in Russia.

The two-storey trunk, measuring 30ft-high by 100ft-long, had been bathed in the same dramatic lighting at night as the nearby cathedral.

It was designed to house an exhibit about travellers who had used the brand's luggage in the past.

After its planned opening on December 2, the exhibit's proceeds were to go to the Naked Hearts children's foundation of Russian supermodel Natalia Vodianova, who invited everyone to attend the "unique event" in a promotional video.

Some have viewed the trunk as a symbol of modern Russia where corruption has made anything possible - even putting up giant luxury advertisements on the symbolic square without asking Muscovites - and nobody would be held responsible.

But a Louis Vuitton spokesman in Paris said "we haven't received any official orders to take down" the trunk.

Late on Wednesday workers were putting up posters on the fence around the trunk, warning people about the beginning of dismantling works.

Lostprophets Ian Watkins: Appeal For 'Victims'

Police have appealed for possible further victims of Ian Watkins to come forward after the ex-Lostprophets singer admitted a string of sex offences.

The charges included attempting to rape a woman's baby in a case the lead officer called "the most shocking and harrowing child abuse evidence I have ever seen".

Detectives are continuing their investigation into the Welsh rock singer, 36, amid speculation there could be more victims in the UK and overseas.

Officers from South Wales, where he lived, have been working with agencies including Interpol, the NSPCC and the Department for Homeland Security in the US.

Watkins also confessed to aiding and abetting another woman to sexually abuse her own child.

And he pleaded guilty to possessing and making indecent photographs of children as well as having extreme pornographic material involving bestiality on his computer hard drive.

He had faced 24 sex offence charges but admitted 11 at the last minute as his trial was due to begin at Cardiff Crown Court alongside the two women, who pleaded guilty to 13 offences in total between them.

Ian Watkins V Festival 2011 Chelmsford - Day 1 Watkins is due to be sentenced in December

Lead investigator Detective Chief Inspector Peter Doyle said: "There is no doubt in my mind that Ian Watkins exploited his celebrity status in order to abuse young children."

He added Tuesday's "outcome does not mark the end of our investigations and we will work tirelessly to identify any other victims or witnesses and seek the justice they deserve".

He went on: "Above all this investigation has been focussed on the protection of children and my thoughts today are with those victims.

Police are urging people who discuss the case on social media websites to be careful about using information that may identify the victims involved.

DCI Doyle said: "Clearly there is strong public feeling about this case and many people are using social media outlets to talk about the issues involved.

"However, there is a very real danger that some of the detail being posted will lead to the identification of victims which will cause a great deal of distress to them and their families."

Meanwhile, a child expert has warned the sex abuse of young children is increasing in number and severity as the age of defenceless victims continues to go down.

Des Mannion, NSPCC Wales national head of service, spoke of his "horror" as the extent of Watkins' secret abuse was made public.

"The desire to sexually abuse small babies is something most of us find too horrific to comprehend," he said.

"However within the significant rise in the number of child abuse images being distributed online over the past year, agencies have noted both an increase in their severity and a significant decline in the ages of the children involved."

Ding Family Murders: Anxiang Du Guilty

Du Got Away After 'Missed' 999 Call

Updated: 3:08pm UK, Wednesday 27 November 2013

The killer who massacred the Ding family was able to flee the country after police mishandled a 999 call from one of the victims, leading to a manhunt lasting more than a year.

Anxiang Du was on the run for 14 months after he stabbed Manchester Metropolitan University lecturer Jifeng "Jeff"' Ding, his wife, Ge "Helen" Chui, and their two daughters, Xing "Nancy", 18, and Alice, 12, on April 29 2011.

Their bodies lay undiscovered for two days in a four-bedroom detached house in Northamptonshire, despite a frantic 999 call being made from Alice Ding's mobile as Du carried out the killings.

Northamptonshire Police have admitted they will "never know what may have happened" if they had responded correctly to the call, made at 3.32pm, in which both girls could be heard screaming before the line went dead.

The call was found to have been "badly mishandled" by the force, resulting in officers being sent to the wrong address and the emergency call closed when nothing untoward was found at that location.

An investigation by the police watchdog, the Independent Police Complaints Commission, later said: "Had police used more detailed checks and a mapping system available to them, the need for a subscriber check would have been established.

"The correct address in Pioneer Close would have been identified and in all likelihood attended by officers within minutes."

Northamptonshire Police have said it was "unlikely" the Ding family could have been saved, but admitted it was possible that Du could have still been at the address if officers had been dispatched to the right location.

The trial heard from pathologist Guy Rutty, who told jurors the family would have died of their stab wounds shortly after they were inflicted due to the blood loss.

However, jurors also heard that Du remained in the Northamptonshire area until late evening.

Du told a psychiatrist after his arrest that he lay down and slept in the Dings' house after carrying out the murders, before leaving under the cover of darkness, taking the family's car.

The silver Vauxhall Corsa was captured on camera at Northampton services off the M1 just before 10pm on April 29.

From there, Du drove to London and the next morning boarded the 8am coach from London Victoria to Paris Gallieni, before travelling on through Spain to Morocco.

The bodies of the Ding family were not discovered until two days later, on the evening of May 1.

Neighbour Jason Horsley reported that he had seen a body lying on the floor through the back window of the Dings' home.

It came hours after officers from Northamptonshire Police visited the property, unaware of what was inside.

They had been asked to visit the Dings by West Midlands Police, who were looking for information in their search for Du, who had been reported missing.

Du's wife had contacted them after he failed to return from work. She told the force of a civil dispute between the two families but not of any threat.

As a result, officers visited the Dings' house at 8.10am on May 1 to ask whether they had seen or heard from Du.

When there was no reply, they simply posted a card through the letterbox and left.

Hours later, Northamptonshire Police received the call from Mr Horsley and the grim discovery was made, sparking a manhunt that would last for 14 months.

Simon Gittany Guilty Of High-Rise Murder

A man has been found guilty of throwing his fiancee off the balcony of their high-rise apartment in central Sydney.

Sydney murder trial Lisa Harnum Ms Harnum was planning to leave Gittany

Simon Gittany was accused of hurling Lisa Harnum from their 15th floor home in a fit of "apoplectic" rage in July 2011 after discovering she planned to leave him and return to her native Canada.

Gittany, 40, who was supported in court by his new girlfriend Rachelle Louise, had maintained throughout the trial that Ms Harnum, 30, had slipped and fallen after climbing over a railing.

He said he had tried to save Ms Harnum, a former ballerina.

But Justice Lucy McCallum said the lack of Ms Harnum's fingerprints on the glass barrier made his claim implausible.

"At many times in his evidence, the accused struck me as being a person playing a role, telling a story which fitted with the objective evidence, but which did no more than that," she said.

Gittany barely reacted in court as the verdict was read out.

Sydney murder trial Simon Gittany Gittany with his new girlfriend, Rachelle Louise, who screamed at the judge

His current girlfriend screamed at the judge "You're wrong", and stormed out of the packed courtroom. Ms Louise's outburst continued after she left the court.

Delivering the verdict in the judge-only trial, Justice McCallum said witness Josh Rathmell, who had been walking past the apartment building on his way to work when he saw Ms Harnum fall, gave a compelling account.

At the time, Mr Rathmell thought he had seen Gittany "unload" a piece of luggage or rubbish and continued on his way. It was only later he realised it was a body and contacted the police.

Justice McCallum said while Gittany and Ms Harnum had loved each other, there was no doubt the accused was "controlling, dominating and at times abusive".

"I am satisfied by the end of July 2011, those tensions had reached a point of crisis," she said.

Sydney murder trial Gittany and Ms Harnum's apartment was in central Sydney

The New South Wales Supreme Court heard that Gittany had secretly monitored Ms Harnum's phone and had installed CCTV cameras inside and outside their apartment.

One of the cameras showed Gittany restraining Ms Harnum outside the flat and then dragging her back inside on the night she died. Ms Harnum was heard yelling: "Please help me, help me, God help me."

Ms Harnum's mother said there were no winners in the case. Her only hope was that her daughter's death would be a powerful wake-up call to other young women.

"Young women who are caught up in situations like my daughter found herself in need a voice," Joan Harnum said.

Gittany, who was held in custody for the final weeks of the trial, will be sentenced in February.

Nigella Lawson Called 'Habitual Criminal'

TV cook Nigella Lawson has been described in court as a "habitual criminal", a day after her ex-husband Charles Saatchi accused her of taking drugs.

The latest claim was made as lawyers argued over whether the trial should go ahead of two of their former employees charged with fraud.

Francesca Grillo, 35, and Elisabetta Grillo, 41, are accused of using a company credit card to buy goods and services for themselves worth some £300,000 while working as their personal assistants.

The Grillo sisters deny the charges and claim Ms Lawson was aware of this expenditure all along.

But the defendants' lawyers argued the case should not go ahead due to the "manipulation of the court process" by Ms Lawson and Mr Saatchi, who had a high-profile divorce earlier this year.

Isleworth Crown Court earlier heard Mr Saatchi allege Ms Lawson was so high on drugs she was unaware what she had permitted the Italian sisters to spend money on.

Anthony Metzer QC, for Elisabetta Grillo, argued the case should be dropped as the women would not be able to receive a fair trial as Ms Lawson and Mr Saatchi were at "loggerheads" and the alleged drug use damaged the celebrity cook's "credibility as an honest witness".

He said if the trial did go ahead "it's a convenient forum for Mr Saatchi and Ms Lawson to rehearse disputed issues between them ... in the criminal courts where, of course, the possibility of libel is not possible".

Charles Saatchi Mr Saatchi alleged Ms Lawson had a cocaine habit

Referring to allegations of drug use by Ms Lawson, Mr Metzer said: "If Mr Saatchi is telling the truth, then Ms Lawson is a habitual criminal."

He added: "The defendants' case is that Nigella Lawson lied to her ex-husband about her drug use and about the expenditure that was incurred by the defendants, both expressly and implicitly, because she was fearful of Mr Saatchi's reaction if he knew about the extent of the expenditure and drug use.

"There was a culture of secrecy within Nigella Lawson's marriage."

Prosecutor Jane Carpenter, who argued against dropping the case, said: "The suggestion that these defendants are sacrificial lambs in order to discredit Ms Lawson I do not accept at all."

After hearing submissions, Judge Robin Johnson ruled the trial should go ahead.

Ms Lawson reached out to her fans by posting a recipe for "Holiday Hotcake" on Twitter, which she described as "the perfect recipe to show thanks for all your support & to those who hashtag #teamNigella".

Npower 'To Axe 1,400 Jobs' In Cost-Cutting Drive

Energy giant npower is set to announce plans to move 1,400 jobs to India and transfer hundreds of others to another company.

The supplier is expected to confirm on Thursday it will outsource frontline call centre operations to a third party in the UK, with back-office work moved to India.

Employees in the Midlands and in the North of England are expected to be the worst affected.

The development emerged just a day after npower axed plans for a £4bn wind farm off the coast of Devon, also on cost grounds.

Its German owner RWE had warned earlier this month that 6,750 jobs would be cut across Europe.

An npower spokesman said: "As we announced a couple of months ago, npower has been undertaking a major review of sites, operations and people across the UK.

"We've been doing this to improve our customer service and keep our costs down, at a time of external pressures on customers' bills.

"As we've always said, we'll tell our people first and then inform the media."

The Unison union attacked the expected decision as a "Christmas nightmare for staff and customers" and warned the company it would backfire badly by damaging its reputation further among UK customers.

National officer Matthew Lay said: "npower have consistently let their customers and staff down by not investing enough in the workforce, technology or in the latest customer service techniques.

"This has led to a huge number of complaints which the company seems to think they can deal with by shifting the responsibility to somewhere else, including to India.

"If the company goes ahead with this disastrous plan, it will backfire badly, damaging their already tarnished reputation for customer service.

"At a time when unemployment is high, what commitment does it show to the UK by shipping these much-needed jobs abroad? And what does this say about their commitment to staff when npower have kept them on tenterhooks, waiting for the axe to fall, for weeks?"

The move is likely to spark renewed anger from politicians over the state of the energy market, and soaring energy bills faced by consumers.

Npower recently topped a customer complaints list, leading an energy watchdog Consumer Futures to describe its performance as "unacceptable".

Carole Waugh Murder: Man Found Guilty

A man who took more than £200,000 from a wealthy businesswoman in the four months after her death has been found guilty of her murder.

Rakesh Bhayani was convicted by a jury at the Old Bailey of killing 50-year-old Carole Waugh, who was stabbed to death at her flat in Marylebone, central London, last April.

His co-accused, Nicholas Kutner, 48, was found not guilty of murder but convicted of perverting the course of justice.

Ms Waugh's body was found in a rented garage in New Malden, southwest London, nearly four months after she disappeared.

During that time, Bhayani withdrew money from Ms Waugh's accounts and on one occasion pretended to be her brother in an attempt to sell her £600,000 home.

He also hired a number of women to impersonate her and buy expensive handbags from Chanel and Selfridges.

The 41-year-old claimed in court that he only found out about Ms Waugh's death seven days after she was killed.

He said he did not contact police because he was involved in a fraud with Kutner and Ms Waugh and feared he would be linked to her murder.

Bhayani, of Wembley, northwest London, told the court that he went with Kutner to Ms Waugh's flat to remove her body from under a bed.

He said he put the corpse into a bag which was carried to a blue Volkswagen Golf that was initially left in a central London car park before being driven to the lock-up.

Bhayani admitted perverting the course of justice by concealing Ms Waugh's death and also conspiracy to defraud.

Kutner, of Kentish Town, northwest London, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud.

A third man, 40-year-old Elie Khoury, of Paddington, central London, was cleared of conspiracy to defraud.

Bhayani and Kutner are due to be sentenced on Thursday.

World Cup Stadium Collapse: Three Killed

Three people have been killed in a partial collapse at the stadium due to host the World Cup opener in Brazil next year.

Part of the grandstand was destroyed when a metal structure buckled at the top of the Arena Corinthians venue in Sao Paulo.

Local media reported that the accident was caused by a crane collapse.

The collapse could delay the delivery of the stadium in time for Fifa's December deadline. The stadium was almost complete.

Brazil has struggled to deliver stadiums, public transportation improvements and other World Cup-related projects within the timelines specified by Fifa.

Some construction sites, such as a new terminal at Sao Paulo's international airport, are being built around the clock seven days a week to try to finish them before the Cup.

The stadium - officially called Arena Corinthians, but known locally as Itaquerao - is being built by Brazilian industrial conglomerate Odebrecht SA.
