A British couple have been killed after their car was crushed between two trucks on a road leading from a ferry port in Dunkirk.
The accident happened just after the couple's car had disembarked from a ferry at Loon-Plage, police said.
One of the trucks had stopped suddenly on a road leading from the disembarkation point to highway A16 around 11.30am local time (10.30 GMT).
The second rammed the couple's car from behind, trapping it between the two trucks, police said.
The couple were both aged in their fifties. No further details of their identities were available.
The Polish truck driver who hit their car and suffered minor injuries told officers he had been unable to stop in time.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office say they are aware of two British deaths in France and stand ready to offer consular assistance.
A spokeswoman for DFDS Seaways, which operates a service between Dover and Dunkirk, said: "We can confirm that a road traffic incident occurred in the port of Dunkirk on Friday 29 November and fatalities have been reported.
"Police are investigating the incident, which took place on the main road leading into the terminal. We are unable to comment on this whilst French police onquiries are taking place."
The spokeswoman could not confirm if the two British people had been passengers on a DFDS ferry.
