Sterilisation Case: Vasectomy Agreed By Court

A High Court judge has agreed to the sterilisation of a man because it is "in his best interests".

It is the first time a UK court has made such a decision.

Referred to as "DE", the 37-year-old has an IQ of 40, meaning he has the mental age of a child aged between six and nine.

The judge said a vasectomy could take place after hearing that DE does not want to become a father again, and another child could cause him "psychological harm".

He already has a young son, born in 2010, with his girlfriend.

Experts said DE was capable of consenting to sexual relationships but could not properly make decisions about contraception.

They said he could not be relied on to use condoms or other birth control methods effectively.

The case came to court because of evidence that DE lacks the capacity to decide whether or not to agree to the sterilisation.

A routine was in place to stop the man meeting his girlfriend without supervision to "keep them safe", the court was told.

Sky News' Senior Correspondent Michelle Clifford, who was at the High Court, said experts believed the man "did not have the power to resist unprotected sex".

There were worries that the man's partner - who also has learning difficulties - could become pregnant again.

Clifford said the first pregnancy had caused "great distress" to the man.

"In the beginning he could not even understand how the birth of the child had anything to do with what he had done.

"He was very unhappy and very disorientated."

The man's mother - as well as expert witnesses - all said he was adamant he does not want another child.

It is hoped the vasectomy will give the man greater independence in his relationship and that he can see his girlfriend without supervision.

A local NHS trust made the application for sterilisation with the support of DE's parents and his GP.

Some critics have said giving consent for the vasectomy could pave the way for sterilisation of other people with learning difficulties.

Judge Mrs Justice Eleanor King acknowledged the sensitivities of the case and said her decision required "strong justification".

However, she added: "In my judgement it is overwhelmingly in his best interests to have a vasectomy."

Mental health charity Mencap previously said it would support the decision if all the man's interests were properly weighed up.

Corrie Star Chris Fountain Suspended Over Rape Rap

A Coronation Street star has been suspended from the soap after he was found to have a "totally unacceptable" rapper alter-ego.

In an apology, Chris Fountain, who plays Tommy Duckworth, said he is "deeply ashamed" of the offensive lyrics in his raps, which glorify rape and violence.

The YouTube clips, which are no longer available online, show Fountain in his rapper persona, The Phantom, wearing a Halloween mask and delivering expletive-laden performances.

In a statement, the 25-year-old, who has starred in Hollyoaks and been a contestant in Dancing On Ice, said: "I would like to sincerely apologise for any offence I have caused. I am deeply ashamed by the lyrics and very much regret my behaviour.

"The videos were made over a year ago when I was experimenting with music and I've not done anything like it since and nor will I."

A Coronation Street spokeswoman said: "ITV find both the language used and the views expressed in this video totally unacceptable.

"Chris Fountain has been suspended pending further inquiries into this matter."

One Direction Fan Suicide Rumours Hit Twitter

Twitter has been flooded with rumours that One Direction fans have committed suicide after a watching a Channel 4 documentary on the group.

Crazy About One Direction, broadcast in the UK on Thursday, has prompted an angry response from fans unhappy about being portrayed as "obsessive".

#ThisIsNotUs is currently one of the top trending hashtags worldwide, as is #RIPLarryShippers - which refers to a sub-group of One Direction fans.

Some users of the site claimed 42 people had committed suicide after the programme - but not one case has yet been confirmed.

Liam Payne from the UK pop group hit back at the programme and tweeted his concern at the suicide rumours.

"Hearing some horrible things... Really hope this isn't true," said the singer.

He added: "We couldn't give a **** what any documentary says there dramatised for entertainment and full of ******** anyway we all know how hard you work for us and see it everyday at our shows."

The singer's responses to the documentary have all been retweeted tens of thousands of times.

Fans on Twitter reacted instantly to their portrayal in the programme.

"Shame on Channel 4 in the UK airing #CrazyAboutOneDirection and showing Directioners in a negative light to troll for ratings. #ThisIsNotUs," said one fan.

Another user posted: "Channel 4 showed the 1% of the fanbase and forgot to include the 99% of directioners who are actually the nicest people ever."

In its description of the programme, the channel describes "death threats to band members' girlfriends" and fans "being willing to chop off limbs and kill kittens to just be in the same room".

In a statement, the broadcaster said: "This documentary made by an award-winning filmmaker followed a number of fans who, by their own admission, are obsessive about the band.

"Whilst not suggesting that the girls featured represent all 1D fans, it examined the impact social media has had on teenage fandom and how it has developed a new form of idol worship for many teenage girls.

"Both Channel 4 and the film makers took the utmost care to produce a documentary with genuine affection and respect for the fans."

An authorised film about the group comes out in the UK on August 29.

Directed by Supersize Me film-maker Morgan Spurlock, it is being billed as a 3D 'warts and all-style' documentary.

One Direction have had phenomenal success in Britain and around the world since they found fame on the X Factor in 2010.

Gibraltar Row: Cameron Calls On EU To Step In

David Cameron has raised concerns over the situation at the Spain-Gibraltar border with the EU – as he considers taking legal action over the stalemate.

In a phonecall to EU Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso, the Prime Minister urged him to send monitors to review the lengthy border control delays - which have been instigated by the Spanish government.

Mr Cameron told Mr Barroso that despite calls to his Spanish counterpart proposing talks to find a solution, no way forward has been proposed.

A Downing Street spokesman said: "The PM explained that despite these efforts, the additional border measures continue and therefore we are now actively considering legal action and collating evidence on the sporadic nature of these measures which would prove that they are illegitimate."

Jose Manuel Barroso EU Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso

Mr Cameron added that the border checks were politically motivated and disproportionate, and against the EU's right of free movement.

He told Mr Barroso that as guardian of the treaties, he should investigate the issue by sending EU monitoring teams to the border to gather evidence.

"The PM emphasised that the commission has a responsibility to do this as part of its role overseeing the application of Union law," the spokesman added.

Mr Barroso said the commission would not hesitate to take any measures necessary to uphold EU law.

The Spanish action followed the construction by the Gibraltar authorities of an artificial reef which Madrid claims ruins fishing in the area.

The centre-right Popular Party government of Mariano Rajoy, which is embroiled in a corruption row, responded by beefing up border controls and suggesting that a fee could be imposed on every vehicle entering or leaving the outpost through its fenced border with Spain.

Daniel Perry: 'Suicide Over Web Blackmail'

Police are investigating claims that a teenage boy killed himself after being targeted by online blackmailers.

Daniel Perry, from Dunfermline, Fife, is thought to have fallen victim to a scam where internet users are lured into online chats and then blackmailed.

The 17-year-old is said to have believed he was talking to a girl of around the same age in the US state of Illinois for several months through Skype and other websites.

Daniel, an apprentice mechanic, is thought to have taken his life on July 15 when he was told by the blackmailers that the conversations would be shared with friends and family unless he paid up.

It is understood he was sent a message which warned that his life would not be worth living unless he deposited money into a named account.

Police confirmed the case was being investigated and urged anyone who feared they were being targeted to contact them.

Daniel's funeral was held at Dunfermline Crematorium and money was raised for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

Hannah Smith killed herself because of online abuse, her father has said. Hannah killed herself after being bullied on Ask.fm

His mother, who asked not to be named, told a local newspaper that she wanted to make other children and parents aware of the dangers.

She said she wished she could tell Daniel that "nothing is ever that bad that you have to kill yourself" and "that nothing is worth taking your own life over".

She added that, when she feels strong enough, she wants to do something to prevent this happening to other young people.

The case follows that of Hannah Smith, 14, who was found hanged in her bedroom at the family home in Leicestershire after she was allegedly bullied on the website Ask.fm.

It has also been reported that Daniel had previously been urged to commit suicide by anonymous users on Ask.fm about three months before he died.

Hannah's father, Dave Smith, has called for an immediate change in the law to protect vulnerable youngsters and to prevent further tragedies from happening.

Mr Smith said on Facebook: "To Daniel Perry's mum, I am so sorry for your loss.

"It is a sad time when your teenagers can't be safe and no one is prepared to make them safe.

Ask.fm home page Latvian-based Ask.fm came under fire after Hannah died

"If you have the strength, please contact me and help me get things changed."

Ask.fm released a statement on Thursday night, saying it was delaying an announcement on changes it planned to implement out of respect for Hannah, whose funeral was held today.

Following Hannah's death, Latvian-based Ask.fm came under fire and has since pledged to work with Leicestershire Police concerning the tragedy.

Alberic Guigou said his company Reputation Squad has seen cases of internet blackmail increase in the four years since he co-founded the online reputation management firm.

"In France, we get up to 10 calls some days regarding such blackmailing," he told Sky News.

"People find you on Skype, social media networks, and they try to trap you into giving away your personal information, especially pictures and videos of you naked.

"Most of the [perpetrators] are professional scammers ... they make it an actual business.

"But sometimes it is people who go to school with you or people from work - but there is much less of that."

Egypt: Deaths Reported In Fresh Cairo Clashes

At least 50 people, including police officers, have reportedly been killed after parts of Egypt descended into further violence.

Tens of thousands of Muslim Brotherhood supporters clashed with armed vigilantes in the fiercest street battles to engulf the capital since the country's Arab Spring uprising.

Residents battled with protesters taking part in what the Brotherhood called the "day of rage", ignited by anger at security forces for clearing two pro-Mohamed Morsi sit-in demonstrations on Wednesday.

State media said a police officer died following an armed attack on a checkpoint in the capital Cairo, where the army has been deployed to guard "important and vital facilities" - and is authorised to use live ammunition.

Witnesses reported seeing the bodies of at least 20 people in rows in a mosque in the centre of the city.

AFP reported that around 12 corpses had been taken to another mosque.

Automatic gunfire echoed across Cairo and black smoke billowed from the capital's huge Ramses Square, with a military helicopter hovering overhead looking down on the chaos.

Security officials said at least 12 people died in the square after protesters clashed with residents in the area.

Footage being broadcast on state TV in the country purported to show armed protesters shooting at security forces in Cairo, where tens of thousands have taken to the streets.

Reuters reported a security official who said 24 policemen have been killed in the last 24 hours.

Sky's Foreign Affairs Editor Tim Marshall said: "State TV's narrative is that this is terrorism, that the (pro-Morsi) Muslim Brotherhood is behind it and that the armed forces are on the right side and are protecting people against what they call terrorism.

"There are few other sources of visual information so far."

Tear gas could be seen during flashpoints in parts of the city, with protesters apparently hurling bottles and rocks at security forces.

AFP said four protesters were killed during battles with security forces in the Suez Canal city of Ismailiya.

Reuters said the casualties included four people in central Cairo, five in Fayoum and quoted medical sources as saying eight were killed in Damietta  - around 120 miles from the capital.

It comes after hundreds were killed on Wednesday in a crackdown by security forces on supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi.

Thousands of pro-Morsi supporters have been marching from north-east Cairo towards the city's centre, chanting "down with military rule".

Barbed wire, armoured personnel carriers and armed soldiers were seen blocking an entrance to Tahrir Square, next to the Egyptian Museum, as well as side streets in downtown Cairo.

Islamist group the Muslim Brotherhood, who back the deposed leader, had earlier issued calls for a nationwide "day of rage" by millions of supporters following Wednesday's deadly clashes.

"Despite the pain and sorrow over the loss of our martyrs, the latest coup makers' crime has increased our determination to end them," it said in a statement.

In a counter move, the National Salvation Front - a loose liberal and leftist coalition - called on Egyptians to take to the streets today against what it said was "obvious terrorism actions" conducted by the Brotherhood.

The Brotherhood accuses the military of staging a coup last month when it ousted Mr Morsi, Egypt's first freely elected president since Hosni Mubarak was toppled.

Liberal and leftist activists who backed the military saw the move as a positive response to public demands.

Catherine Ashton's European External Action Service said top officials of all 28 European Union members would meet on Monday to review the crisis in Egypt and discuss possible EU action.

She has urged Europe to agree on "appropriate measures".

Prime Minister David Cameron and French President Francois Hollande are to hold talks about the ongoing unrest during a phone call this afternoon, while Germany said it condemned the violence in Egypt "in the strongest terms".

However, Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah said his country stood with Egypt in its battle against "terrorism".

Today's protest calls raised fears of renewed violence after nationwide clashes following Wednesday's operation to clear two protest camps in Cairo supporting Mr Morsi left more than 600 dead, including Sky News cameraman Mick Deane.

There were fresh attacks on security forces during a tense day on Thursday, with at least seven soldiers and a policeman killed in the Sinai peninsula and another police officer killed in the central city of Assiut.

Clashes Leave Many Dead And Injured Officials say more than 600 people died in nationwide clashes on Wednesday

With the country under a state of emergency and many provinces hit by night-time curfews, the interior ministry ordered police to use live ammunition if government buildings came under attack.

International criticism of the bloodshed has continued to pour in and the United Nations Security Council held an emergency meeting last night on the crisis at the request of France, Britain and Australia.

Afterwards, the Argentinian president of the council urged all sides to exercise "maximum restraint".

Ambassador Maria Cristina Perceval, whose country currently presides over the 15-country body, said member states called for an end to the violence and spoke of the need to advance "national reconciliation".

A military helicopter flies over clouds of smoke after clashes between members of the Muslim Brotherhood and supporters of ousted Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi at Azbkya police station during clashes at Ramses Square A military helicopter flies over Cairo

Signalling his displeasure at the worst bloodshed in Egypt for generations, US President Barack Obama said normal co-operation between Washington and Cairo could not continue and announced the cancellation of military exercises with Egypt next month.

"We deplore violence against civilians. We support universal rights essential to human dignity, including the right to peaceful protest," he said.

His remarks sparked a defiant response from the Egyptian presidency which said that "statements not based on facts may encourage violent armed groups".

Despite the condemnation, Egypt's interim prime minister Hazem al Beblawi praised the police for their "self-restraint" and said the government remained committed to an army-drafted roadmap calling for elections in 2014.

He justified the use of force saying supporters of Mr Morsi had been sowing chaos, "terrorising citizens, attacking public and private property".

Egypt's ambassador to Britain has said the force used in deadly raids on Cairo protest camps was "not at all excessive".

Speaking at the Egyptian embassy in London, Ashraf El Kholy said the camps set up by Morsi loyalists were "not as peaceful and innocent" as protesters claimed.

"I think with these number of deaths and this amount of violence, (the protesters) got what they wanted," he said.

While several countries, including the US and France, have advised their citizens not to travel to anywhere in Egypt, UK holiday companies are still operating in parts of the country.

Ferry Carrying 700 Crashes Into Cargo Ship

A ferry with 700 passengers on board has collided with a cargo ship near the Philippine city of Cebu, according to the coastguard.

The coast guard said the MV Thomas Aquinas listed and began sinking after hitting the Sulpicio Express Seven Cargo vessel and the captain ordered the ship abandoned.

Officer Joy Villegas said the collision occurred on Friday evening close to the shore near the central city of Cebu. The ferry was travelling from Cebu to Manila.

She said at least 17 people were confirmed dead and around 525 rescued.

Two rescue vessels have been dispatched and other nearby boats were helping to pull passengers from the water.

There has been no official confirmation of casualties but passenger Jerwin Agudong told radio station DZBB people were trapped on the ferry and he had seen bodies in the water.

He said: "It seems some were not able to get out. I pity the children. We saw dead bodies on the side, and some being rescued."

Hundreds of passengers jumped into the ocean as the ship started to sink, according to survivors. Many of the passengers were asleep and others struggled to find their way in the dark.

Accidents at sea are common in the Philippine archipelago because of frequent storms, badly maintained boats and weak enforcement of safety regulations.

In 1987, the ferry Dona Paz sank after colliding with a fuel tanker in the Philippines, killing 4,341 people in the world's worst peacetime maritime disaster.

In 2008, the ferry MV Princess of the Stars capsized during a typhoon, killing nearly 800 people.
