A family recruited a man to kidnap a six-year-old boy to teach him a "terrorising life lesson" on stranger danger, Missouri police said.
The youngster was abducted last Monday at gunpoint after school in Troy and told he would never see his family again, according to the authorities.
The boy's aunt, Denise Kroutil, convinced her colleague at a petrol station, Nathan Firoved, to snatch her nephew because he was "too nice", said Lincoln County Sheriff's Office.
The victim's 25-year-old mother, Elizabeth Hupp, and grandmother, Rose Brewer, 58, allegedly backed the plot, even though they did not know Firoved's last name.
On 2 February, Firoved, 23, is accused of luring the boy into his vehicle as he got off the school bus.
As he drove off, Firoved told the terrified youngster he would never "see his mommy again" and be "nailed to the wall of a shed", it is alleged.
Firoved then allegedly threatened the child with a handgun if he didn't stop crying, according to the authorities.
Investigators said Firoved tied up the boy's hands and feet with plastic bags and hooded him with a jacket.
He then drove the blindfolded boy to his own family home, carried him into the basement and left him there, it is alleged.
Kroutil, the boy's 38-year-old aunt, went into the basement, pulled the victim's pants down and shouted he would be sold into sexual slavery, according to the authorities.
She also allegedly rebuked the child for not resisting her or Firoved.
"The victim remained in the basement for some time before he was unbound and told to go upstairs, where the victim's family lectured him about stranger danger," a police report read.
Family members and Firoved kept in touch via mobile phone for the whole ordeal, which lasted about four hours, say authorities.
On Wednesday, the victim told his teachers, who alerted the Missouri Division of Family Services.
The child has been placed in protective custody.
Investigators said the accused told them they were only teaching the boy a lesson and believed they had done nothing wrong.
Firoved, Brewer and Kroutil were charged with kidnapping, felonious restraint and abuse or neglect of a child.
The boy's mother, Hupp, was charged with kidnapping, abuse and neglect of a child.
All four remain in custody at Lincoln County Jail on a $250,000 (£164,000) bond.
