Two British tourists have died after one tried to save the other while swimming in the sea off Cyprus.
The man, named as 61-year-old Harry Bernard, managed to drag the woman, identified in reports as 66-year-old Christine Sugarhood, from the water and attempted to revive her with CPR before collapsing himself.
Mrs Sugarhood, from Haywards Heath in West Sussex, had got into trouble while saving her husband in seas off Pathos, according to police.
While the husband survived, Mrs Sugarhood and Londoner Mr Bernard were rushed to medical clinics before being pronounced dead.
A spokesman for the police in Paphos said both had died "because of a heart attack".
He said: "A man from England was swimming yesterday and his wife tried to save him because he had a problem in the sea. The wife saved her husband but got into a problem in the water.
"A third person tried to save the woman. He got her out of the water but they both died, because of a heart attack."
Post-mortem examinations are due to be carried out.
The Bernards and Sugarhoods were both staying at the four-star Athena Beach Hotel.
The hotel's duty manager, who asked not to be named, said: "Mr Sugarhood is okay. He is devastated but he has a lot of friends here, so he is not alone.
"The same as Ms Harris, Mr Bernard's wife - her family have just arrived."
The duty manager added that Mr and Mrs Sugarhood were in Paphos with friends to play bowls.
A spokeswoman for the Foreign Office said: "We can confirm the deaths of two British nationals on 4 November in Cyprus. We are providing consular assistance at this difficult time."
The Cyprus Mail newspaper reported that there were no lifeguards on the beach at the time because they finish working at the end of October.
Paphos is a popular tourist destination notorious for its strong currents. The tragedy happened in the Yeroskipou area.
