A shark scare led to the closure of six beaches near the Spanish city of Barcelona as people were banned from swimming.

Three small blue sharks, which were each 1-1.5 metres long, were spotted by lifeguardsclose to shore, sparking the safety move by two local town halls.

The beaches in the resorts of Premia del Mar and El Masnou were shut on Tuesday and red warning flags were put up.

Hasina Ahmad from the Red Cross said: "Three sharks...were spotted near the area where people swim up to two metres from the shore, very close.

"They could be seen from the beach."

A surveillance boat then looked for the fish but it did not find them.

However by Wednesday morning, the beaches were re-opened and green flags were flying again, indicating it was safe to bathe in the sea, said the Red Cross.

Two of the charity's boats carrying out routine patrols were continuing to keep an eye out for the sharks, a spokeswoman added.

The Florida Natural History Museum says the blue shark is considered a dangerous species and is known to have attacked other sharks and boats.
