Oxford Union President Arrested Over 'Rape'

An Oxford University student who chairs the world famous Oxford Union debating society has been arrested on suspicion of rape.

Ben Sullivan remains in custody after being detained following an allegation of rape and attempted rape.

A spokesman for Thames Valley Police told Sky News a 21-year-old man was arrested in Oxford on Wednesday morning.

The story was broken by university newspaper The Tab, which claimed Sullivan was "woken at approximately 7.10am and taken to a local police station".

Sullivan attends Christ Church college, which told The Tab in an email: "We have unfortunately received information that a junior member of Christ Church has been arrested and that this may become the subject of interest from the press."

The student union leader was elected unopposed in 2013 to serve as president this term.

It makes him one of the most prominent students in the country.

Sullivan has given speeches which have been viewed tens of thousands of times on YouTube, including one in front of high-profile politicians such as Conservative MP John Redwood.
