Prince Harry has qualified as an Apache Aircraft Commander within 3 Regiment Army Air Corps which puts him "at the very top of his profession".
The post gives the royal, known as Captain Wales within the Armed Forces, overall control of the two-man helicopter during missions.
It is the culmination of three years of training during which he has won the prize for the best Co-Pilot Gunner and completed a tour of Afghanistan.
Prince Harry's commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Tom de la Rue said: "This is a tremendous achievement for Captain Wales, who passed with flying colours.
"I am delighted that his new status as a qualified Apache Aircraft Commander and Co-Pilot Gunner places him at the very top of his profession."
Prince Harry in front of an Apache helicopter A Ministry of Defence spokesperson said the Prince was put through a "gruelling six-hour flying assessment" covering the UK's skyline.
The route took him from his base at Wattisham Airfield in Suffolk, up to Newcastle, cutting across to RAF Spadeadam and then Carlise, before flying down over Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham and finishing back at base.
During the assessment he was tested across a wide range of tactical and procedural scenarios, including a simulated low level attack at RAF Spadeadam and flying in controlled airspace.
The royal spent Christmas in Afghanistan as part of his deployment, which lasted from September last year to January.
During an interview on his return Prince Harry said that killing the Taliban was a job "you would expect to do" as a soldier.
A spokesperson for Kensington Palace said that he would now " continue with normal duties as an Apache Pilot based at Wattisham Airfield".
