CCTV Toddler Appeal: Police Thank Public

A pensioner has come forward after police launched an appeal over CCTV footage of a man with a small child in a Derby shopping centre.

The footage appeared to show the man taking a mother's 21-month-old boy by the hand outside Boots on Thursday morning.

A shopper contacted the police who appealed to the public over the matter.

As a result, an 80-year-old man contacted the police to say he thought he was the person caught on camera.

He was subsequently interviewed and detectives say they are satisfied he was acting with good intentions and no further action will be taken.

Detective Chief Inspector Nick Lamb said: "We are very grateful to the response from the public and to the man who contacted us and was later interviewed.

The man came forward to explain he thought the child was someone else's

"The gentleman was acting with good intentions, believing that the young boy had become separated from his mother.

"The man was a little confused and thought the child's mother was somebody else, and had tried to do a good deed in reuniting them."

Police have issued advice to the public about what to do if a child appears to be alone.

::  Stay still with the child and do not lead them away from where you found them
::  Ask the child where their parents or guardians are, and look around for them
::  Consider asking other passers-by if they know where the child's parents might be
::  If the parents or guardians are not found, take the child to the nearest shop and contact a member of staff immediately
::  You can also call store security or police on 101.
