Ariel Castro Called Kidnap Victim's Mother

Ohio kidnapper Ariel Castro told investigators he called the mother of one of his three victims to let her know her daughter was fine.

In tapes of his FBI interrogation, obtained by NBC, Castro said he called Amanda Berry's mother on her mobile.  

"I think I said something ... that I have her daughter and that she's okay and that she's my wife now  - something like that, you know, probably not the exact words," Castro is heard telling investigators.

He said he hung up quickly and did not have a conversation with her.

Ms Berry's mother died before she could see her daughter free.

Ms Berry, Gina DeJesus, Berry and Michelle Knight disappeared between 2002 and 2004, when they were 16, 14 and 20-years-old, and were held captive in Castro's house in Ohio.

The tapes emerged just days after Castro hanged himself in his cell. He had been sentenced to life in prison for kidnapping, beating and raping his victims for a decade.

In the tapes, which show Castro shortly after his arrest in May following the women's escape, he also tells authorities they missed opportunities to capture him.

Castro said video surveillance near the school Ms DeJesus attended should have made police aware of him.

He also mentioned that on one occasion a girlfriend noticed a TV on in a room occupied by Ms Knight - making him worried that he might be caught.

Two reviews have been ordered after Castro's suicide. One will look into the suicide itself, while the other is examining whether he received proper medical and mental health care leading up the suicide.

A representative of Castro's family was expected to claim his body next week.

The three victims have not publicly commented on their captor's suicide.
